INZART has had more than 93,000 records added to the NZ Index database. These records include digitised press cuttings and re-keyed catalogue cards.
Stephanie Reid says “These cuttings go back to the early 1960s (with a sprinkling of some from earlier times) and provide coverage of the NZ art scene from that time on. As we sifted through some of the cuttings we realised that the data could be mined for information other than art related areas. For instance, you can see the evolution of different typographical styles through various newspapers through the 1960s and 70s. The way women are portrayed in the media, and the assumptions about their place, their concerns etc is also interesting-and there are images of city precincts that have long been demolished. So we are hoping that the new material will prove useful to those working outside the traditional art/art history areas as well as those working within.
While the press cuttings are available in full text through the link for our university community, we are confident that those accessing INZART through Knowledge Basket will be able to source at least some of the articles from INNZ and others through their local library.”
Of course, NZ Index clients are able to search both INNZ and INZART at the same time.

New Bibliography for NZ Index
Bibliography of Published New Zealand Family Histories

The Bibliography of Published New Zealand Family Histories is a listing of separately-published histories of families with descendants in New Zealand. All of the histories are indexed by author, title, keyword and family names; many are also indexed by founder names; country, county and town of origin; ship on which the family arrived in New Zealand; year of arrival; and region and place of main settlement in New Zealand. Some records also include the surnames of the families into which the first generation of descendants married. The bibliography is compiled by Tony Millett (tony.millett@xtra.co.nz). There are 3350+ records in the collection, which has been added to the New Zealand Index. It is updated periodically by Tony.

The New Zealand Card Index
was added to the New Zealand Index database today. The Knowledge Basket version does not include images of the Library Cards from which the data was transcribed (all 416,544 of them!). We have attempted to extract the dates mentioned in the References or Notes field to make a “year” field – this has succeeded for the majority of records, but there are some which do not have extractable dates. We have also expanded known abbreviations of sources indexed so that the user does not have to look them up separately in most cases.
Thanks to Auckland City Libraries for this valuable contribution.

8 November 2009
Manukau’s Journey – Manukau’s Journey is a chronology of significant events in the history of South Auckland or the Counties Manukau region (Otahuhu, Manukau City, Papakura, Franklin). Lists of sources and in some cases pictorial materials are attached. Many thanks to Bruce Ringer from Manukau Public Libraries, for allowing us to bring this new and innovative information resource to New Zealand Index. See more at Manukau’s Journey – Introduction

Enhancements to NZ Index
7 January 2009
We have completed a migration to new search screens and capabilities. The main change from a user’s perspective is simply that they may now Email themselves search results. From a system perspective, the new system allows dynamic load balancing to take place between two search servers – effectively doubling the computing power available for searching. All non-search applications have also been relocated to two new failover servers, further reducing load on the search servers. We are able to add new search servers to this configuration as needed. The search servers are also “mirrored”, so that if one fails the other one will be available with the same data immediately.
