The Knowledge Basket History

The first database to be made available to The Knowledge Basket subscribers was the (then) GP Print Legislation database collection in November 1994.

The LegislationNZ database was quickly followed by Newztext – an extensive database of full-text newspaper and journal articles. Newztext quickly became the go-to archive for New Zealand news articles and an essential tool for researchers throughout New Zealand monitoring current news developments.

As an additional resource to Newztext, a database of indexed records to New Zealand publications was established, first as Newzindex, then as additional indexes were made available to The Knowledge Basket, Newzindex was re-named the New Zealand Index. The New Zealand Index is now a significant aggregation of New Zealand indexes and bibliographies subscribed to by many New Zealand libraries.

More recently, The Knowledge Basket also became the host for the University of Auckland Library’s index to the hand written Māori Land Court Minute Books. This index has become an invaluable tool for researchers throughout New Zealand.
