The author, Elsdon Best (1856-1931) was an ethnologist with the Dominion Museum for 20 years and in that time compiled an impressive number of publications on Māori history and lore.

Gilbert Archey
Gilbert Edward Archey, 1890 – 1974, was a zoologist, museum director, and ethnologist. Amongst many activities and services he performed was as director of the Auckland Institute and Museum. His study of Maori carving and sculpture resulted in several publications.
