This bibliography was compiled in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Masters in Library and Information Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, 1995 - 96. It is an attempt to gather together all the guides, bibliographies and indexes which have been created to enhance access to Maori information. The objectives of compiling the bibliography were: to identify the guides and bibliographies which have been compiled on Maori topics, to highlight topic areas where no bibliographies have been created and to prevent duplication of effort so that bibliographies covering the same topics are not recreated. Therefore the intended scope of this bibliography was comprehensive. Unfortunately the time and data constraints of this project ( around 250 items) has meant that the resulting bibliography is not fully comprehensive. However it should give users an idea of the type of guides which exist and identify the majority of the readily accessible, published guides.
Existing bibliographies in the area.
There do not appear to be any other bibliographies which have gathered together all the Maori bibliographies, guides and finding aids. There is the list of “Bibliographies” in Taylor’s A bibliography of publications on the New Zealand Maori and the Moriori of the Chatham Islands (item 36). However as this was published in 1972 it is in need of updating. The scope for inclusion here was “catalogues, indexes, bibliographies and reference lists”. There were also selective bibliographies published in Kathie Irwin’s Maori people and the library: a bibliography of Ngati Kahungunu and Te Waka o Takitumu resources 1989 (item 33), and in He waka eke noa: Maori information resources published by Quest Rapuara in 1991. This bibliography aims to be more comprehensive and up to date than any of those listed above.
Scope.
The bibliography includes all guides to both published and unpublished Maori information. It is not limited by format or by date. That is: the guides can be in any format and will still be included - this includes computer files, card indexes, print. However journal indexes have only been included if they are separately published and the journal is Maori or contains significant Maori information. The bibliography was not limited only to English language guides but, as the compiler does not speak Maori and the catalogues searched are in English, only English language guides have been located. The cut off date for inclusion was 1995. The guides which have been located fit into the following four categories.
• Institution specific guides to Maori published and/or unpublished information. When these have been formally published this bibliography aims to cover these comprehensively but unpublished guides are only included selectively.
• Guides on specific topics, such as education. Published guides or guides noted in library catalogues or on NZBN (the New Zealand Bibliographic Network which lists publications available in New Zealand) have been included comprehensively. Unpublished guides have been included selectively.
• Guides to specific sources or publications, such as the Index to Alexander Mackays’ compendium of official documents relative to Native affairs in the South Island or Material by Maori in the AJHR. Published guides are included comprehensively, unpublished guides selectively.
• Guides to formats: such as theses (Union list of theses of the university of New Zealand) or manuscripts (National register of archives and manuscripts) or legislation. Published guides are included if the format is likely to contain significant Maori information. Unpublished guides are not included.
Published Guides: inclusions and exclusions.
Guides published on microform and databases held on computers have also been included, as have guides relating to unpublished information. As the primary focus of this project was to locate published guides the computer files, card indexes and other unpublished guides have only been included if they were noted in Millett’s Bibliographical Work in Progress 1980- or if they were referred to in other literature seen by the compiler such as leaflets published about the holding institution. It is clear that many more of these exist than are noted here, however, given the time limits of this project, this is an area which will require future research. Bibliographies published in journal literature are also only included on a selective bases. Although INNZ was checked (Index New Zealand which has indexed the contents of journals since 1987 ) for these it is apparent that many more exist than were located on INNZ. Users will therefore have to check indexes of likely journals for this literature. Bibliographies published within monographs have also, on the whole, been excluded. Again this is an area with potential for future research. In the interim, users of this bibliography should check on library catalogues for books published in the area of interest as those with substantial bibliographies usually have a note to that effect on the record. Another possible source for the contents of monographs is the Maori Bibliography computer database created and maintained by the New Zealand Collection Librarians at the University of Waikato.
Unpublished Guides: inclusions and exclusions.
Only a sample of the total guides which exist on unpublished information relating to Maori such as manuscripts and archives have been included. The coverage for published guides to unpublished information is comprehensive, as far as possible. However the unpublished guides to unpublished information have only been included selectively. They exist in a variety of formats: electronic, card indexes, unpublished typescripts. Therefore users interested in this information would be advised to check directly with the institution holding the manuscripts or archives to see the access provided. Details are sometimes provided in the institutions’ publicity leaflets on Maori information, in institution specific journals (eg. Friends of the Hocken Library Bulletin or Turnbull Library Record) and also in national directories such as National Register of Archives and Manuscripts. Again there is potential to compile a separate bibliography to these guides to Maori information in the future.
Users, arrangement and indexing.
The audience who would use this bibliography are librarians and those researching Maori information. Consequently the bibliography has been arranged by subject and format with cross references to facilitate access. At present guides are scattered within library collections so this arrangement will help users find the guides in their area of interest. It will also mean they can use the bibliography as a reference tool and only look at the categories of interest. Additional author and title indexes are provided. There are also three appendices. Appendix 1 contains “superseded Items”. This was included so that users would know the status of publications available in the collection of their library. Appendix 2. contains book catalogues. These are published and widely available however they are not usually a first choice for research as they only include items available at time of publication. However they may be valuable to supplement older bibliographies in these areas. The addenda includes items which were missed from the main numeric sequence. They have see also references in the main sequence under the appropriate subject category. The appendices and addenda are indexed. All items and cross references made refer to item numbers, App.1., App.2., or the Addenda. Titles in both Maori and English have been indexed under both languages.
Sources searched for material.
The sources checked to locate guides included:
1. Library Catalogues
The online catalogues as Victoria University of Wellington and the National Library of
New Zealand. (A subject keyword search using “Maori” and “bibliography”.)The
microfiche catalogue at Alexander Turnbull library was also checked using the subject
heading “Maoris - bibliography”.
2. Library Collections
The compiler browsed the Maori reference collection at Alexander Turnbull Library, and
at the National Library of New Zealand. (Including pamphlets - many useful guides fall
into this category.)
3. Published Sources
The main published sources used were bibliographies located within some guides, such as
Taylor. An important source for locating computer files and internally published guides
was Millett’s Bibliographical work in New Zealand (item 25) although users should be
aware that some bibliographies in the “in progress” section are never necessarily
completed or published. Another useful source for locating unpublished bibliographies on
Maori topics was Rimmer and Siddell’s Annotated bibliography of library school
bibliographies. 1946 -72 (item 235), and the supplements to this.
4. NZBN
This was searched using Library of Congress Subject Headings. Bibliographies within
monographs were not searched for due to time constraints.
5. INNZ
This was searched using the subject keywords Maori and bibliography.
Citation Style
The standard used for citations was Chicago B. However ,as no guide for citing computer databases could be located, these were cited in the following way.
Computer File Citations.

This research is a bibliography of the guides, finding aids and bibliographies which exist to enhance access to Maori information.
It includes guides in all formats. It also covers guides to both published and unpublished information. However the bibliography is more comprehensive for published information.
To locate the guides library catalogues, printed sources and online sources were searched.

1961-65. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q016.571 [1967] P
Organised alphabetically by author. Contains useful items on archaeology and
Maori architecture but the lack of annotations and of additional indexes makes this
bibliography of limited use. Mainly journal articles. Excludes items published in
the New Zealand Archaeological Association Newsletter and items listed in the
following bibliographies. [Bibliography of NZ archaeology from June 1961. New
Zealand Archaeological Association Newsletter 1962. 5 (3): 200-2. and
Bibliography of NZ archaeology from September 1962, New Zealand

articles are not included. 1962. New Zealand Archaeological Association
Newsletter 5 (3): 200-2.
Available: NLNZ
Consists of 28 items arranged alphabetically by author. Some have brief
annotations regarding content. Includes articles published from June 1961 to
September 1962. Item 4 continues this bibliography.
4. Bibliography of New Zealand archaeology from September 1962 - newsletter
articles are not included. 1963. New Zealand Archaeological Association
Newsletter 6 (4): 197-8.

to item 3.
5. Bulmer, Susan. 1994. Sources for the archaeology of the Maaori settlement of
the Tamaki volcanic district. Science and Research Series No. 63. Wellington:
Dept. of Conservation.
Available: ATL Per SCI
This bibliography is divided by location. The scope of the bibliography is a
comprehensive list of all written material on the archaeology of the Tamaki district,
including published material and unpublished reports available in public
collections. Each item discusses the site and notes sources of published information
available pertaining to it. There is also a section listing general references which
are useful for New Zealand archaeology and archaeology of the Auckland region.
An important bibliography for studying archaeology in New Zealand despite some
duplication of the sources listed for Auckland in Butler (below) This bibliography
is comprehensive for this region therefore it should be one of the first places to
look if Aucklalnd is the area of interest. Includes a separate author index. The
detailed table of contents lists the sites included.
6. Butler, D. 1959. Bibliography of archaeology - Part 1. Polynesia: significant
publications. Part 2. New Zealand: publications from 1950. Wellington: Library
School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q016.571 1959 P , NLNZ 016 PAY.
The bibliography is divided into two main parts. New Zealand as part of
Polynesia - divided into North Island, South Island and General Material. Items
included date pre-1950. The second part consists of New Zealand publications
from 1950 and the scope is inclusive. It is divided by subject and region. Part Two
is not annotated. There is a separate subject/author/title index to each part. There
are 84 items in part two and 17 items relating to NZ in part one. A useful
bibliography for anyone interested in Maori archaeology. Wider scope than Bulmer
(item 5).
7. Duff, R.S. and R.S.Allan. 1949. Selected bibliography of the anthropology of
New Zealand 1900-1948. Christchurch: Seventh Pacific Science Congress.
Available: ATL q016.572 1949 P.
The author notes that literature relating to the Maori race is widely scattered
and the quality of the various items varies greatly . Therefore, one assumes, that
the items included are of varying quality. For pre-1900 items the author refers
readers to A.Hamilton’s A Hand-list of certain papers relating more or less
directly to the Maori race and published in Various Publications (item 31). For
pre-1908 books relating to Maori the author refers readers to T.M.Hocken’s A
Bibliography of the Literature Relating to New Zealand (item 24). This
bibliography consists of an alphabetical (by author) list giving basic
bibliographical information and is not annotated. There are no additional indexes.
Despite its’ age it is still of value to anyone studying in this area because it has not
been superseded. It mainly consists of journal articles.
8. Gotts, Susan M. 1971. Selective list of monographs in the Alexander Turnbull
Library dealing with certain pre-European Maori artifacts. Wellington: Library
School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q016.5729931 1971.
The bibliography focuses on smaller useful artifacts (tools/implements) rather
than artistic artifacts and also includes personal ornaments. Includes journal
articles which have been bound separately by ATL. The annotations, which are
descriptive, mention the general content of works, give page references for
artifacts, and note illustrations. There is an author title index. Items are organised
into a subject division. Divided by type of artefact and also format (illustrative,
journal articles) Does not give locations in ATL. Useful guide for someone
studying in area because of detail given.
9. Green R.C. and G.S.Park. 1976. New Zealand prehistory - informing the
public. New Zealand Archaeological Association Newsletter. 19 (4): 187-192.
Available: NLNZ
The authors note that this list is not definitive. It is organised by format: Books
and Pamphlets and Articles. Arrangement within each sequence is alphabetical by
author. None of the items are annotated. Dates of publication for items included
range from 1969 - to the mid 1970s. Mainly seems to be of value if used in
conjunction with Harris (below). Items on Maori topics are included. List is not so
large that it cannot be scanned. No additional indexes.
10. Harris, Judith. 1976. Views on New Zealand’s prehistory: a select
bibliography for the non-specialist reader 1968-76. Wellington: Library School.
Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
This bibliography aims to help the non-specialist find material using both
archaeological and non archaeological data. All items have full, critical
annotations. Journal articles are included in the scope. The annotations also details
the level of items included. Organised in a classified arrangement with an author
and subject index and a title and keyword index. Does not include: “works clearly
identified as for children or school use, works written by archaeologists for
discussions among themselves, discussions of the origins of Polynesians - unless
specifically discuss N.Z., myths, legends, literature and genealogical studies.” Also
excluded are briefer, more popular accounts which are covered by R.C.Green and
G.S.Park (above). All items cited are held in Wellington libraries. Also of value to
researchers interested in Maori customs/culture.
11. MacLean, Janet. 1963. New Zealand Archaeology publications from 1959-62:
a select bibliography. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL. q016.913 (1963) p.
The bibliography is aimed at archaeology students and knowledgeable
layperson. The focus is on excavating and site surveying. Divided into two parts.
General material and material on specific sites. All important articles on specific
sites included. Author and place name index. Brief descriptive annotations. See
also bibliography by Stewart (below)
12. Stewart F. 1968. New Zealand archaeological literature 1963 - June 1968
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
Continues the bibliography compiled by Janet MacLean (item 11). Scope
includes information “not dealing specifically with archaeological investigations,
but highly relevant to the development of cultural framework theories for NZ”.
Contains some of the same information as in Barton (item 2) but also includes
material published in New Zealand Archaeological Association Newsletter and is
annotated and indexed. Divided into a general section and then by region,
including a pre-European Maori population areas. All items have brief descriptive
annotations. The bibliography includes an author/sites and subject index. Consists
of 222 items and appears to be fairly comprehensive. Formats covered include
pamphlets, books, periodical articles and theses.

13. McKeon, Brian. 1959. The history of building design in New Zealand from
Maori times to the present day; a select bibliography. Wellington: Library School.
Available: ATL q016.7209931 1959 P
Intent of the author is a history of architecture in New Zealand. A select list of
books and periodicals on New Zealand building design - mainly items from three
journals - Home and Building, Design Review and Journal of NZ Institute of
Architects. Does not include material in specialist journals on Maori design. Items
are annotated. Lists New Zealand serials relating to architecture which could be
useful pointers for anyone interested in more depth. The bibliography is divided
into four sections: general, the Maori, European architecture and public buildings.
The Maori section is further divided into: general, regional. However as it only
contains 9 items, mainly from serials, it is of limited use to anyone seriously
interested in Maori architecture.

14. Burt, Eugene C. ed. 1990. Oceanic Art: a five year cumulative bibliography,
mid 1983 through 1988. Seattle, WA: Data Arts.
Available: ATL P q016.7099 OCE 1990.
This bibliography brings together all Oceanic art related items which appeared
in the first six volumes of the Ethnoarts Index, covering the period from July 1
1983 to December 31 1988 . It is divided regionally and has a New Zealand section
which lists 131 items. Includes journal articles, monographs and catalogues. Some
items are annotated. A very useful starting point for anyone with an interest in
Maori art and artefacts. However note the date range - ie. only items published
during these dates are included.
15. Glowacki, M. 1971. A select bibliography on the occurrence and significance
of the manaia motif with particular reference to Maori wood carving. Wellington:
Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
According to the compiler the bibliography is, in part, a selection of material
pertaining to the origin and significance of the manaia and in part a selection of the
type of material in which good documented photographs of extant carvings may be
found. Not an exhaustive compilation of papers on artifacts and implements.
Includes papers with theories on significance of manaia. Includes an author /title
index. Alphabetical arrangement of bibliography with a separate section for general
reference works. Detailed annotations of items included. Author made decision not
to include indexing of Maori names for carvings/implements and artifacts as felt
would distort balance of work. This has resulted in a far less accessible
bibliography - although as the subject area is so specialised this is maybe not too
important. Useful for anyone interested in the manaia and in Maori carving.
16. Hanson, Louise. and F.Allan Hanson. 1984. The Art of Oceania: a
bibliography. Boston, Mass: G.K. Hall.
Available: NLNZ Rec # 102115.
102115.
According to the compiler “this is a bibliography treating the visual arts of
Oceania”. It includes monographs, catalogues, theses, dissertations and periodical
literature. Except for theses and dissertations, unpublished works are not included.
Nor are articles in newspapers or, for the most part, museum annual reports. “A
special effort was made to include relevant literature from all countries - especially
literature indigenous to Oceania”. There are brief, non critical annotations to items
if the title is unclear on the work and its contents. The bibliography is divided by
region. There is also a cross-region section which may contain items of interest on
Maori art. New Zealand is included in the Polynesia section. Items are organised
alphabetically by author. There are separate personal name, title and subject
indexes. In the subject index New Zealand is further divided by the type of art -
motifs, baskets, bone, carving, architecture etc. Seems fairly comprehensive and is
an important source for anyone interested in traditional Maori art. Includes items
from sources such as Te Ao Hou, Journal of the Polynesian Society.
17. Proctor, J. 1965. Pounamu, greenstone of New Zealand: a selective list.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
Bibliography aims to include all the basic material written about greenstone.
Items are organised alphabetically by author. Includes an index to titles of
periodical items. Includes a lot of information on Maori and the collection and use
of greenstone for decoration, as well as details on jade ornaments found.
18. Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand. Resource Centre. 1986. Nga
Mea Maori: a bibliography of materials available from the resource centre.
Wellington: The Centre, Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand.
Available: VUW. Ref. Z4127 M2 Q3 M.
The bibliography is based on the collection of the resource centre. “It covers a
wide range of materials on and relating to Maori culture with an emphasis on arts
and crafts”. Divided by format. Although the scope is limited to the library
collection this publication draws together an extensive collection of material
relating to Maori art. There are no additional indexes however there is a listing of
subject headings used in the card catalogue and the vertical file. (Books,
Periodicals, Periodical Articles, Articles from vertical files, Audio-visual material)
and alphabetical arrangement within sections. None of the items are annotated. The
Queen Elizabeth Arts Council have also published the following which detail new
materials which should be available from the resource centre. Not sighted.
He Mea Maori: General. 1989.
He Mea Maori: Videos. 1989.
He Mea Maori -Slides. 1989.
He Mea Maori: Carving, Weaving, Painting, Crafts - a bibliography 1989
Treaty of Waitangi: Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 1990
Biculturalism - a bibliography. 1990.
19. Smyth, Bernard W. and Hilary Howorth. 1978. Books and pamphlets relating
to culture and the arts in New Zealand: A bibliography including works published
to the end of the year 1977. Christchurch: University of Canterbury, Dept. of
Extension Studies in association with NZ National Commission for UNESCO and
the Department of Internal Affairs.
Available: VUW r Z4127 C55 S667 B.
Divided into the following subject areas: Culture, Arts, Language and
Literature, Communication, Libraries and Archives. The authors note that many
items have been excluded from the bibliography as they were considered beyond
the scope or because their content was found in another included work. “Books,
pamphlets, theses and other monographs are within the scope of the bibliography if
they contain significant reference to the arts or cultural and aesthetic development
in NZ”. The bibliography does not include periodicals. It contains a significant
amount of items with Maori content. The Culture, Arts and Language and
Literature categories include sections on Maori music, sculpture, carving,
architecture etc. This bibliography is a useful starting place because of this detailed
access - for example a good place to find items on Maori architecture, or Maori
sculpture and carving for which I have not located specific bibliographies. All
items have brief annotations. There is an index of authors/editors and compilers
and a subject index with a large number of references under “Maori”.

20. Bagnall, A.G. 1980 -. New Zealand National Bibliography to the year 1960.
Wellington: Government Printer.
Available: widely
Organised by date. Volume 1: To 1889. This part of the national bibliography
supercedes monographs noted by Hocken and Collier in their bibliographies and is
arranged alphabetically. However it is not comprehensive for ephemera and does
not include journal articles. Includes a chronological index and a separate
author/subject/title index. For items relevant to Maori research check this index.
For items on Maori subjects published after 1889 and up to 1960 it is necessary to
check the subject index included in Volume 5. An important source for
monographs. For ephemera it is necessary to cross check with the Hocken
bibliography ( see item 24). For items published after 1960 check the New Zealand
National Bibliography on paper and then on microfiche up to 1982, and the New
Zealand Bibliographic Network (online) to present date.
21. Cammack, Floyd M. and Shiro Saito. 1962. Pacific Island bibliography. New
York: Scarecrow Press
Available: ATL 016.99 1962 P.
This bibliography is based on the holdings of the Pacific Collection at the
University of Hawaii Gregg M. Sinclair Library. For Maori monographs it is
largely superseded by Taylor however it is worth checking because it includes
ephemeral items not in Taylor. Primarily a bibliography of materials in the social
sciences. This includes items on the New Zealand Maori as well as on other New
Zealand topics. There is a subject index but the bibliography is in alphabetical
sequence. For Maori material the researcher would be better to start with Taylor’s
A bibliography of publications on the NZ Maori .. as this contains most of the
material relevant to Maori listed by Cammack.
22. Carmody, Christine. 1973. A chronological bibliography of nineteenth century
New Zealand periodicals held in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New
Zealand. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
This list is based on the Alexander Turnbull Library definition of periodical. It
does not include official publications, reports, annuals, annual reports, tracts,
proceedings of reports of societies, institutions or boards etc. The entries are
arranged in chronological order and alphabetically within each year. There is a
separate title index and a subject index. Items which were not in English were
included but not annotated. Includes quite a number of titles under Maori in the
subject index (this indicates that these titles are primarily concerned with Maori
subjects). In the bibliography of Maori Serials listed in Rauemi Tuhi an exclusion
is the serials held in Alexander Turnbull Library, therefore this is a useful
supplement to that.
23. Fildes, H.E.M. 1984. Selective indexes to certain books relating to early New
Zealand compiled by H.E.M. Fildes ca. 1920-1937 and now transcribed by
Victoria University of Wellington. Wellington: Victoria University of Wellington.
Available: NLNZ NZC 016.9931 FIL 1984
Divided into four general categories, one of which is Maoris. Consists of a
listing by placename or personal name with a list of monographs in which
references can be found. Once the reference is located the user can check the
citations for bibliographical details. No indication of the extent or value of the
citation is given. There is a separate list of works indexed. Most items are quite old
and consist of a mixture of serials, and monographs. Probably of most use to
biographical researchers as many well known Maori figures are indexed.
24. Hocken, T.M. 1909. A bibliography of the literature relating to New
Zealand. Wellington: Government Printer.
Available: NLNZ NZC 016.9931 HOC 1973
The main content of the bibliography is in chronological order and Hocken
also includes a separate section of publications in Maori, however this has been
superseded by Williams’ A bibliography of printed Maori to 1900, and
supplement. The Hocken bibliography is of value to researchers on Maori topics
less for the Maori language bibliography but instead for the detailed subject index
which refers to many items written about the Maori dating from the 1830s. All
items included list the author, physical description, title and some have brief
descriptive annotations. The monographs listed are superseded by Bagnall’s New
Zealand National Bibliography to the year 1960. However Bagnall does not
include periodical articles and Hocken does, as well as a lot of grey literature.
Although it is difficult to identify which items are articles from the index it would
be worthwhile checking Hocken after searching the Bagnall and Williams
bibliographies. This bibliography has a supplement by Johnstone (see item 25)
25. Johnstone, A.H. Supplement to Hocken’s Bibliography of New Zealand
literature. 1927. Wellington: Whitcombe & Tombs Ltd.
Available: NLNZ NZC 016.9931 HOC 1927
This supplement includes items which were omitted from the original Hocken
bibliography. The scope remains the same as the original. Maori topics are listed
in the subject index. It does not have a Maori section, unlike the original. A
supplement to item 24.
26. Millett, A.P.U. and F.T.H. Cole. comp. 1981 - . Bibliographical work in New
Zealand 1980....work in progress and work published. Hamilton: University of
Waikato Library.
Available: NLNZ NZC 016.01 MIL 1980
Published annually this is an important guide to bibliographies compiled in
New Zealand. Access to bibliographies on Maori topics from 1986 is through the
subject index ( prior to this there is no subject access therefore it is necessary to
check all the titles) An important source to check for Maori bibliographical
publications as it includes computer files which are not necessarily published in
print format, as well as bibliographies published in journals. Note that some of the
items noted in this publication are never published, or not necessarily ever
published in print.
27. Millett, A.P.U. comp. 1989. New Zealand publications republished in
microform: a bibliography. Hamilton: University of Waikato Library.
Available: NLNZ NZC PAM 015 MIL 1989
The intent of this publication is “to list New Zealand publications which have
been microfilmed or microfiched, copies of which could be made available for
purchase by other libraries”. Does not include unpublished material. Items are
arranged alphabetically by author. Many of the items relate to Maori subjects
therefore this is useful to someone trying to purchase additional resources for
researchers - includes some of the items in this bibliography such as Maori land
claims as recorded in the AJHR, 1855-1985, writings by S. Percy Smith, Turton’s
Epitome of official documents relative to native affairs... etc. No additional
indexing.
28. Royal Commonwealth Society. 1971. Subject catalogue of The Royal
Commonwealth Society, London. Volume 6. Australia, New Zealand, Pacific.
Boston, Mass: G.K. Hall.
Available: NLNZ Rec # 203945
203945
This supplements the Subject catalogue of the Library... listed below (item 28).
It is organised geographically and within each country by subject. This includes
journal articles and monographs relating to Maori topics under “Native Races”.
This section is further subdivided by ethnological, migration, social customs,
politics and history. Items included date up to the 1960s. Consists of copies of
cards from the catalogue. General sections such as Medicine and Hygiene are also
worth checking for Maori information. The value of this catalogue lies in the
subject arrangement and the inclusion of journal articles, reports.
29. Royal Empire Society. 1931. Subject catalogue of the Library. Vol. 2:
Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, general voyages and travels. London:
Royal Empire Society, reprinted by Royal Commonwealth Society, 1971.
Available: NLNZ Reference Collection.
This contains a listing of books relating to New Zealand which are held in the
Library. Under Native Races all the material on Maori topics are listed. Subject
categories include Anthropological, Anthropological - arts and crafts, craniology,
bibliography, folk-lore and religion, migrations, music, social customs, language
and literature, Political and historical. Chronological arrangement within sections,
Not annotated. Includes journal articles and monographs and has a separate author
index. Although most of the content of this publication has been superseded by
Bagnall or included in Hocken’s bibliography it is still useful because of the
classified arrangement. The scope is restricted to items in the library collection but
it has large holdings of earlier publications. It is easier to look up the topic and scan
the titles than to look in the index of Bagnall and check every reference.
Supplemented by the Royal Commonwealth Society Subject Catalogue.. listed
above (item 27).

30. Cooke, Dorothy. 1960. The Maori Today 1950-60. A bibliography. Wellington:
Library School. Unpublished typescript.

The bibliography does not include newspaper articles, or the shorter articles
from the periodical Te Ao Hou. Divided into subject categories (general, the
Maori, welfare and social problems, health, race relations, population, education).
Brief annotations of content of items. Although some of the subject categories,
such as education and land, have been superseded by more recent research or
bibliographies, some may still be of value to researchers into Maori topics. (eg.
housing, population). An author title index is available at the end of the
bibliography. Consists of 101 items.
31. Hamilton A. 1911. Handlist of certain books and papers containing
information relating more or less directly to the Maori of New Zealand.
Wellington: Dominion Museum.
Available: NLNZ MAO 016.5729931 HAM 1911.
The author notes that he has excluded books likely to be in library catalogues
and included some small local, private publications. The list mostly consists of
articles from journals. Organised alphabetically by author. There are no additional
indexes therefore to use effectively would need to know the author’s name. Despite
its age it is still of value for accessing the early journal literature relating to Maori
topics.
32. He waka eke noa: Maori information resources. 1991. Wellington: Quest
Rapuara.
Available: NLNZ NZC MAO PAM 016.3058994 WAK 1991.
The aim of this bibliography is to help researchers, educators and trainers
locate useful information resources. Divided into 12 sections. (introduction, te reo
Maori, oral arts, written arts, te mahi taonga, Maoritanga, Maori women, history,
the way ahead, information, management and bibliographies) Most of these general
categories are further subdivided (for example the Oral Arts section subdivides into
Karanga, Wahikorero, Waiata, Haka, Whakatauki, Whakapapa, Pakiwaitara and
Tribal and regional histories). None of the items are annotated but all have full
bibliographic data. A very comprehensive and wide ranging list of sources
available relating to Maori topics. Useful to those wishing to build up collections in
libraries, and to people interested in starting to do research on the areas covered.
Particularly useful for areas such as politics for which I was unable to locate a
separate bibliography. A useful bibliography for anyone interested in Maori
subjects.

35. Te Manu Aute: the paper kite: a selective annotated bibliography of Maori
studies. 1983. Wellington: Department of Education.
Available: NLNZ NZC PAM 016.9931004994 MAN 1983 (Y/9050)
The bibliography is divided into two sections. The first: recommended items
[Tino pai] and the second: Be Careful [Kia tupato] - items to be used carefully
because they are oversimplified, outdated or have other flaws which restrict their
usefulness. Some are not culturally acceptable because of stereotyping or
patronising attitudes The first section is further subdivided by topic eg. language,
art etc. The stated audience for this bibliography is teachers, administrators and
teacher librarians as well as those with some knowledge already. A selective
bibliography but the compilers selected from a comprehensive collection of
material up to 1978 although have included some readily available publications
since then . An excellent introductory bibliography on Maori topics. The critical
annotations indicate the value of items. A separate author and title index is
included. The book also has a supplement: A bibliography of the Maori through
children’s books - reprinted from Education 1981.Vol. 30, 2. It notes the
publications available, recommends the age group and notes probable value. There
are no additional indexes for the supplement.
36. Taylor C.R.H. 1972. A bibliography of publications on the New Zealand
Maori and the Moriori of the Chatham Islands. Oxford: Clarendon Press.
Available: NLNZ MAO 016.5729931 TAY 1972.
A revised and updated version of the New Zealand and Maori sections of
Taylor’s Pacific Bibliography. Divided into broad subject areas it lists all the
books and periodical articles published in these areas. Taylor notes that the listing
is not a definitive record as it does not include ephemeral items. One of the
sections is bibliography and some of the items listed in this appear in this
bibliography. Taylor is the definitive bibliography of published material on Maori
topics - up to the date that this bibliography was published. Includes a detailed
author/subject index. At the beginning Taylor also notes useful bibliographies
relating to Maori topics - some are included in this research but not all. Many of
these bibliographies have been superseded since Taylor’s bibliography was
published in 1972.
37. Van Der Poots, Gloria. 1950. The Maori People Today - an annotated
bibliography. Wellington: NZ Library School. Unpublished typescript.

today, their place in the social system and the attempts made to integrate their way
of life with Western civilisation”. Includes an introductory section of background
material - dating from the 1870s to the early nineteenth century, and a current
section divided by subject. (general, biography, education, health, land, culture).
Includes material from monographs, journal articles and official publications. All
items (84) are annotated. Most of the monograph material is superseded by
Bagnall. This may still be of value for the access provided to journal articles,
although in some areas, such as education, it is superseded by more recent
bibliographies. Includes an author index. In all of limited value due to its age and
selective choice of material.

publications listed. Useful to update existing collection.

39. Alexander Turnbull Library. 1995. Biographies Index: Rarangi Haurongo.
Wellington, National Library of New Zealand. Published in microform.
Available: as a card index in reference area of National library and on microfiche,
which can be purchased from National Library.
According to Millett this is “an index to biographical information in a wide
range of published and some manuscript sources”. The microfilm consists of
copies of the card index, each entry notes the person’s name and where the
reference is located. In alphabetical order. The index was begun in the 1940s by
staff at Alexander Turnbull Library. It covers both published and manuscript
sources. Up to 1987 it included biographical articles from newspapers and serials,
post 1987 this information is found in INNZ. Although the Biographies Index is
now closed it remains an important source for anyone seeking biographical
information on New Zealand people.

does not include material from newspapers or archive material. The author also
notes that she has excluded poetry by and about Te Rauparaha. Most items have
descriptive annotations - intended to indicate the content and level of the work.
Author/title and subject index provided to help access items. This also contains
material of interest to research on land, warfare and early New Zealand. Useful
bibliography containing 128 items.

summarised, and Parliamentary speeches and Reports - only includes the most
important, not exhaustive. No separate indexes. Useful bibliography for anyone
with an interest in Ngata or his work.
42. Sweetman, Sheryl. 1973. Sir James Carroll: a preliminary bibliography.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
The bibliography is divided into: Section 1: this includes annotations from
major parliamentary debates from Carroll’s time in parliament 1887-1919 and
Section 2 : this includes periodical articles, theses and books about Carroll -not
necessarily comprehensive. It also includes addenda noting useful manuscript
sources held in Alexander Turnbull Library and National Archives. Items in
Section 1 are arranged chronologically. Annotations give basic content of speech.
Items in Section 2 are arranged by format and within this division alphabetically by
author. Includes an author/title index and a subject index. Of obvious value to
anyone interested in biographical information on Carroll but also useful as an
insight into Maori issues and concerns in parliament at this time.

45. Auckland City Libraries. Iwidex.
Computer file held at Auckland Public Library, New Zealand & Pacific
Department. Not sighted.
This is a computer database of Auckland Public Library NZ&P sources. A
computer file index to information on Iwi appearing in manuscripts, books,
periodicals and newspapers. Probably compiled in the 1980s, still being updated.
The main emphasis is on historical information. Index to Maori waka, traditions,
waiata, haka, tribal whenua, maunga, carving, weaving, stories and whakapapa.
Created to enable better access to whakapapa, history traditions and culture, marae
and family histories for researchers.. Mainly indexes: books, unpublished material
(eg. the Grey Maori manuscripts) and periodical and newspaper articles. According
to Millett,1 in 1994 it consisted of 950 entries. It is planned to publish print
versions in sections - eg. Ngapuhi: Volume 1. 1993. Patricia French and Robin
Hakopa. This is available: ATL Ref shelves Ref P q016.3058 IWI 1993. It consists
of alphabetical subject/author index with item references. Items are arranged in
sequence according to their item number in the database. Each entry notes the
publication details, location, subjects, iwi and waka and includes a brief description
of extent of item. Obviously extremely useful to any researcher interested in
Ngapuhi. On a more general level it also is useful for biographical references to
famous Maori and other historical interests. (eg. missions, land tenure) Millet2
notes that Volume 2. “Tainui” is due for publication late 1994 however it does not
appear to have been published yet.

47. Canterbury Museum and Library. The Maori Research Index.- an index of
people and place names indexed from manuscript and published items.
A computer file, access through the Canterbury Museum.
Not sighted.
According to a Canterbury Museum publicity leaflet, about 1500 people and
4,000 placenames have been indexed. The scope note in Te hikoi marama notes
that “in conjunction with the Ngai Tahu Maori Trust Board, the library is preparing
a Maori research index, indexing people, places, cultural items and concepts from
all types of records held at the museum and relevant to South Island Maori”.
48. Laurie, John. Index to Minute Books of the Maori Land Court 1865-1910.
Held as a computer file accessible at the University of Auckland Library.
Not sighted.
According to Millett Bibliographical work in New Zealand... in 1994, this is
compiled by the New Zealand and Pacific Department Librarians at the University
of Auckland. The scope includes “judges and court minute books. Hearings are
indexed by block name, witnesses names, type of case, length of case, place of
sitting, whakapapa and hapu”. Progress at that stage (1994): Gisborne - completed

49. University of Waikato. Library. New Zealand Collection Librarians
Bibliography of the Waikato region. Edited by R.C. Hallett and A.P.U. Millett.
Held as a computer file available through the Waikato University Library OPAC.
A 1988 print version is also available: VUW r Z4120.3 B582 1988.
This bibliography “is intended to include all books, theses, newspaper
supplements and periodical articles which deal in whole or in part with the Waikato
region”. Compiled in the 1980s. It is intended to be continually updated online and
to extend the coverage to include the King Country and Coromandel regions. It
provides widespread access to the contents of books which is not available
elsewhere. Items are not annotated.
There is a 1986 printout of this available. It is entitled Maori Studies -
publications extracted from bibliography of the Waikato region. It is available at
VUW rZ4127 M2 M296, and on the ATL reference shelves. It is organised into
broad sections by subject then further subdivided by topic. Subject headings:
Fiction, History, Maoris, Power and energy, recreation and sport, social and
economic conditions, trade and industry. Contains a subject and author index. This
printout remains an important source for anyone with an interest in Maori studies.
If users cannot access the computer file which is most up to date, then they can use
the 1988 published version or the 1986 printout. The main value of the printout of
Maori studies publications extracted from the bibliography.. is because it separates
out all the items relevant to Maori studies. (other than the “Maori” section these are
only accessible in the 1988 print version by checking all the references under
“Maori” in the index)
50. University of Waikato. Library. New Zealand Collection Librarians Index to Te

“The Maori bibliography indexes material on all aspects of Maori studies. It is,
however, intended to supplement other sources of information. It does not usually
index material that can be easily found in library online catalogues, INNZ, JPS,
AJHR. It indexes chapters or sections in books, theses and conference proceedings
and some iwi newspapers”.3 Particularly strong on Maori history and culture. It is
kept as a computer file of more than 2,000 records (1995) and is regularly updated.
Publication is not intended.

55. Dewes, Koro. 1966. Maori society and culture: a list of publications. Te Ao
Hou. 54: 51-3
Available: ATL
A selective list emphasising modern Maori society and culture. Compiled as a
guide for “adults studying Maori society and culture at university extension
classes”. The compiler notes that many of the sources listed have specialised
bibliographies. Organised by time period: The Maori before Cook, The Years
Between, The Maori Today. The Maori today is subdivided into other topic areas:
Population and socio-economic status, Health, social organisation and culture,
culture and personality, religion, Maori-Pakeha relations, Maori literature, Fiction
about Maoris and language study. Despite its age it is still a useful list of readings,
although there are no annotations or indexing the classified approach makes
location of relevant material easy.
56. Howard, Irwin et al. 1963. Culture and personality in the Pacific Islands: a
bibliography. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Library (for) Anthropological
Society of Hawaii.
Available: ATL 016.99 1963 P
Divided into two sections. Section one covers sources with a central relevance
to culture and personality in the Pacific. Section 2 consists of items of more
secondary interest. Includes: Australia, New Zealand, Micronesia, Melanesia and
Polynesia. Includes sources up to January 1963. Organised alphabetically by
author. Does include some material on New Zealand Maori but the lack of a
subject index and lack of annotations means this information is not very accessible.
The researcher would have to read through all the titles. The age of the
bibliography also detracts from its value for current research.
57. Kaye, Margaret M. 1974. A bibliography of material relating to the marae in
modern Maori society 1950-. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q016.5729931 KAY 1974 P
The bibliography is divided by subject and format. It has separate author, title
and subject indexes. It is of value generally to students of Maori culture and
specifically to those interested in Marae. The bibliography “aims to be
comprehensive but excludes reports of openings, ceremonies on Marae”. The
author note that material on Maori land is included as this is important for an
understanding of the marae. All items have critical annotations noting the content
and level of items. Particular marae are named in the subject index. There are 97
items in total. Although in need of updating this is a useful guide to the literature
available on Marae and also literature relating to the role of Marae in Maori
culture. Includes letters, journal articles and monographs. The detailed subject
index increases its usefulness.
58. McGath, Vicki. 1976. General introduction to Polynesian culture: an
annotated bibliography. Honolulu: Hawaii Bicentennial Commission.
Available: ATL q016.57299 MACG 1976 P .
The bibliography includes a section on ethnomusicology and intercultural
education, and the general Pacific and then is organised on a geographical basis.
Bibliography includes a small New Zealand section (around 30 items). All items
are annotated (descriptive) and include basic bibliographic details. Books, journal
articles and records are included. Lists only a selection of the items available and
kept at a very general level. Useful as an introduction for the layperson or novice
however most items are pre 1970 so it would need updating. No additional indexes.
59. Siddle, Graeme L. 1975. Aspects of Maoritanga: a select bibliography for
public libraries. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available at ATL: q016.5729931 SID 1975 P.
Items are divided into broad subject categories - representing the characteristics
of Maoritanga. An author/title/subject index is provided for access. An attempt by
the author to create a list of the most relevant items for use by librarians to ensure
Maoritanga is covered in the library collection. The author has on the whole
“omitted publications specifically for children or for use in formal education”. The
resulting material is therefore at a higher level. Although this bibliography is in
need of updating much of the material included is still available and useful today.
All the items are annotated and the content still seems to be of value for librarians
setting up Maori collections now.

60. Benton, Nena B. et al. 1989. Bilingual education: an annotated selected
bibliography for New Zealand teachers. Wellington: Te Wahanga Maori Bilingual
Education Network, New Zealand Council for Educational Research.
Available: only at Department of Education, couldn’t trace at NLNZ
Aimed at selecting the literature relevant to school teachers in New Zealand
who are teaching in bilingual schools. It is divided into three sections. The first is
on Essential Sources (general), the second is on Important Sources - part 1 is on
NZ, part 2 is on other countries, and the third section includes interesting
additional readings. Entries are organised alphabetically by author within each
section. All items are fully annotated. There is an author/title/subject index.
Consists of 59 items, important guide to readings available in this area. The
organisation allows readers only interested in the NZ situation to find items of
interest easily.
61. Benton, Richard. comp. 1983. Register of research relating to Maori language
and education, March 1979 to August 1983. Wellington: New Zealand. Council for
Educational Research.
Available: ATL P Box 499.4 BEN 1983.
This register updates two earlier registers of research relating to Maori
schooling (Jan 1975-June 1977, June 1977-March 1979) however the scope has
been broadened to include language and education. Divided into two sections:
completed projects and current, ongoing and proposed projects. Within each
section further subject division into “studies dealing mainly with the Maori
language” and “other”. Includes indexes to topics and researchers. Each entry
includes information on the name of researcher, title of project, sources of funding
and a description of the project and contact name. Although this is not a
bibliography to published material, as such, I am including it because it is
important for researchers on these Maori topics to know of its existence and also
some of these projects may not be accessible through normal bibliographic
channels (grey literature).
62. Coppell, W.G. 1977. A world catalogue of theses and dissertations concerning
the education of the peoples of the Pacific Islands, including the New Zealand
Maori. Honolulu: Pacific Islands Studies Program, University of Hawaii.
Available: ATL qPer PAC 1977:1 P
Includes work at Masters and Doctorial levels although some bachelors theses
have been included if the topic was considered particularly significant. Diploma
theses from New Zealand are included as these are at postgraduate level - this
makes it particularly useful as it gives additional access not provided by the Union
list of theses of the University of New Zealand which only lists M.A. and Phd level
theses (item 236). The items are organised alphabetically by author and not
annotated. Notes the author, title, university, date, length and degree. There is also
an author and subject index organised by country. The New Zealand section
includes items on New Zealand Maori and on Pacific islanders in New Zealand.
The bibliography is also dated now as it only covers up to the end of 1976.
However it does collate work done in this area and points scholars interested in the
area to past research.
63. Earle, Virginia. 1993. Two decades of bilingual education in New Zealand:
developments from 1972-1991: a selective annotated bibliography. Occasional
papers in bibliography and librarianship no. 24. Wellington: Victoria University of
Wellington. Dept. of Library and Information Studies.
Available:NLNZ NZC PAM 016.37197994 EAR 1993.
Divided into two sections. The International Context (theories, issues and case
studies) and Bilingual education in New Zealand (Developments from 1972-1991).
There is an author/title/subject index to the items. The target audience is students
of education. The first section is a selection of the major theories and issues
relating to bilingual education. Chronological arrangement within each section. All
items are annotated indicating scope and value. An important and useful
bibliography for anyone interested in bilingual education particularly in the NZ
context.
64. Gordon, Kathleen. 1964. Maori education 1940 - 1964, a bibliography.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
The content of this bibliography has been largely duplicated by Roth 1964 (see
item 73). However, as Roth is not annotated, the Gordon bibliography is valuable
as it indicates the content of items. The Gordon bibliography is divided into broad
subject categories with further subdivisions within each subject. Contains
author/title/subject index. Its value is limited by its small size (55 items). Anyone
with a serious interest in this area would probably be better advised to go straight
to the Roth bibliography and use this one to supplement the information located
there.
65. He kete kupu korero: a bibliography of readings on te kohanga reo and kura
kaupapa Maori. 1992. 2d. ed. Richard Rapatu, project co-ordinator 1991, edited
by Margie Hohepa, 1992. Auckland: University of Auckland, Research Unit for
Maori Education.
Available: VUW r Z4127 M2 K43.
A bibliography of reading resources relevant to Te Kohanga Reo and Kura
Kaupapa Maori. Divided into three sections: Material directly related to Te
Kohanga Reo, Material directly related to Kura Kaupapa Maori and general
educational references with relevance to Te Kohanga Reo, and Kura Kaupapa.
Some items have brief annotations. In alphabetical author sequence. No additional
indexes which detracts from usefulness. The first two sections are quite small and
therefore easy to scan. Includes a note that is “not intended as the definitive
bibliography but as a start”. Items include letters, reviews, chapters from
monographs. Most material included is recent.
66. He taonga iti: suggested resources for Taha Maori in early childhood
education. 1988. Wellington: Department of Education.
Available: NLNZ MAO PAM 016 TAO 1988.
Organised into sections by the producers of the resources and by subject.
Subject areas include: Language learning resources, Maori heritage, and Stories in
Maori and English. The aim of the publication is to “draw together a selection of
the available Maori resources for those teaching young children. Care has been
taken to ensure that resources of quality are included in this bibliography”. Items
are arranged alphabetically and are annotated indicating possible use. No additional
indexes provided but publication seems to meet the needs of its intended audience.
67. Hirsh, Walter. 1990. A report on issues and factors relating to Maori
achievement in the education system. Wellington: Ministry of Education.
Available: NLNZ NZC 371.97994 HIR 1990.
Divided into three sections: an introduction, an outline of the issues and the
bibliography. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by author and contains
material on bilingual education, Maori education, and race relations. There are also
reports by institutions on educational initiatives such as scholarships, Kura
Kaupapa. Gives a useful list of bibliographical references for researchers interested
in Maori education. No additional indexing (ie. subject, author) available.
68. Lander, Josie, Karen Burnett, and Jim Marshall. 1993. The retention of Maori
in schooling: a partially annotated bibliography (Te tari rangahau o te
matauranga Maori). Monograph No. 17. Auckland: Research Unit for Maori
Education, University of Auckland.
Available: NLNZ MAO PAM 016.371979942 LAN 1993.
This bibliography is of value to researchers working in areas related to Maori
schooling and education. It is in alphabetical arrangement by author and includes
journal articles, monographs and grey literature such as theses. There are no
additional indexes and material included dates from the 1950s to 1980s. Most
items are annotated.
69. McKenzie M.B. 1970. Maori education 1960-69: a bibliography. Wellington:
New Zealand Council for Educational Research.
Available: NLNZ NZC 016.3709931 MCK 1970.
This was originally prepared as a bibliography for Library School in 1969. The
author attempts to bring together all material available on facets of Maori
education with items with sociological relevance to the subject. Newspaper articles
were excluded from the bibliography and the majority of items are journal articles.
The cut off date for inclusion in the bibliography was 30 September 1969 - there
are additional entries in the 1970 edition. Divided by subject into 13 sections. Most
items have descriptive annotations. Contains an author/title index. Includes
chapters from monographs, letters, editorials and grey literature such as reports and
theses. The author also indicates where the item can be located. Items have cross
references to relevant related items in bibliography. Very useful comprehensive
bibliography on Maori education although a little old now.
70. New Zealand Council for Educational Research. 1985. NZCER 1934-1984:
The Published Record - a bibliography of NZCER and NZCER staff publications.
Compiled by Elaine Marland and Keith Pickens. Wellington: NZCER.
Available: NLNZ NZC
Divided by topic, including a section on Maori education, language and
culture. Although this does duplicate some of the material covered by Benton: Te
wahanga Maori: publications and documents (see item 70). It is a useful additional
source for items which are relevant but not published by Te Wahanga Maori. It is
organised chronologically and there are 181 items. It is more substantial than Te
wahanga Maori: publications and documents, easier to use and probably more
widely available. Te wahanga Maori: publications and documents does have more
recent material as it goes up to 1988, but this bibliography dates further back
including material as early as 1940. Includes an author and subject descriptor
index.
71. New Zealand Council for Educational Research. Te Wahanga Maori. 1988. Te
Wahanga Maori: publications and documents, 1972-88. Compiled by Richard
Benton. Wellington: Te Wahanga Maori, Te Runanga Whakawa Matauranga o
Aotearoa.NZCER
Available: NLNZ NZC PAM 016.4994 NEW 1988.
A pamphlet which lists most papers, articles, and other material made
available through the Te Wahanga Maori, NZCER and NZCER Maori Unit
publications as well as items published elsewhere. The list indicates availability of
item. Listed by type of publication which makes this less user friendly than it could
be but it is important as it lists a lot of grey literature. At the end all the
publications included are listed by topic and item references are listed. No author
index or annotations. The only way to access the material in this publication is by
reading through all the titles. Therefore it is quite confusing to access the
information but still a useful source. (Supersedes the earlier 1986 publication:
Publications and documents prepared by Te Wahanga Maori/The Maori Unit,
NZCER to July 31 1986)
72. New Zealand. Department of Education. 1984. Taha Maori: a resource list; a
list of materials available from resource division. Compiled by Derek Mihotich.
Wellington: Dept. of Education. Unpublished typescript.
Available: located on NZBN, not available at NLNZ, at Ministry of Education
Library.
This is a list of materials available from the Resource Division, Department of
Education, in 1984. It is divided into four parts. 1. Material from School Journal,
2. Material from Post-Primary Bulletin, 3. Films and Filmstrips NFL, 4. Tapes,
VPU/Records NFL. Items are listed alphabetically by author, or by title in sections
3 and 4. Each item has a brief description and a note on where it can be located. No
additional indexing. Provides access to articles with Maori content in the School
Journal and Post Primary Bulletin. Also gives access not provided anywhere else
to audiovisual resources on Maori topics. Still of value to teachers, but not widely
available.
73. Ranby P. 1978. Theses and dissertations on Maori education 1970 -1976.
Wellington: Te Wahanga Maori, New Zealand Council for Educational Research.
Available: NLNZ L 016.3709931 RAN 1978, ATL q016.37197 RAN 1978 P
“This bibliography of theses and dissertations on Maori education is the
beginning of the updating of the work of Roth and McKenzie and consists of those
items from Picken’s list which do not appear in the earlier bibliographies
(K.Pickens Unpublished Degree and Diploma Studies in Education in New
Zealand Journal of Educational Studies, Vol.11, No.1 (May 1976):80-3.”. The
period covered fully is from 1970-76. Arranged alphabetically by author. Includes
a separate subject index.
74. Roth B. 1964. A bibliography of New Zealand education. Wellington: New
Zealand Council for Educational Research.
Available: NLNZ NZC 016.3709931 ROT 1964
Although this bibliography has a more general scope than solely Maori
education (it aims to “list all works published within NZ on education and works
on NZ education published outside NZ” ) there are entries under Maori in the
subject index and therefore it provides some guidance to material which exists in
this area. Items are not annotated and include various formats (theses, journal
articles, government publications and monographs). For the years 1950-60
McKenzie (item 68), which is annotated is probably a more useful source for
information in this area. However this bibliography is an important source for
information published pre-1960.
75. Taha Maori resources = nga kete raukara: A catalogue prepared by the
advisers on the education of Maori and Pacific Islanders. 1988. Auckland: Kohia
Teachers Centre.
Available: NLNZ National Children’s Collection. L 016.993 TAHA MA
“The following catalogue is a composite file, taken from a variety of sources.
The primary intention is to assist teachers by providing in one booklet, a quick
reference for resources with a Maori theme or content”. Items are organised by the
producer/publisher of the resource (Visual Production Unit, Audio Visual
Resource, Department of Education., National Film Library Catalogue, Department
of Education., School Journal Catalogue 1965-85, School Publications Branch,
Department of Education.) Within each section a rough subject division. None of
the sections by the various producers have been brought together by subject and
there are no indexes making this source difficult to use. If the teacher was looking
specifically by format (film or video or school journal) a check through all the
items would probably result in locating items of value. The catalogue looks as
though it has been quickly compiled without much thought concerning provision of
access. Basically a print out of the various producers catalogues brought together in
one booklet.
76. Wylie, Frank. 1969. Some attitudes towards Maori education, as found in the
Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1854 - 1875.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
The author of this bibliography notes that attitudes toward Maori education
tend to overlap with attitudes toward inter-relationships between Maori and Pakeha
in general, therefore the material included in the bibliography reflect the overlap.
Items are organised chronologically and there is a name/subject index. Includes
items on pakehas attitudes to Maori in the nineteenth century as well as details
about Native Schools. However the value of the bibliography for research is
limited by the very specific topic area and scope - it does not include offical
attitudes in other publications such as New Zealand Gazette, The Parliamentary
Debates and Provincial papers.

of the tangata whenua: te Maori: te hokinga mai = the return home. Auckland City
Art Gallery, 28 June - 10 Sept. 1987. Catalogue prepared by Jonathon Dennis.
Wellington: New Zealand Film Archive.
This catalogue is “not intended to be the definitive catalogue of this material
but it does include many of the more vigorous, important and moving films yet
made in this country”. In the absence of a more complete listing this catalogue is of
great value to anyone researching Maori films. Although it duplicates some of the
material listed below it is more comprehensive listing around 60 films. Films are
arranged chronologically. Each item has a brief content note, title, production,
photography, length and type of film used. It also includes a title index. Includes
documentaries and television productions.
78. --------. 1984. Maori and Pacific films from New Zealand/ Des films Maoris &
Pacifiques de la Nouvelle Zelande, 1901-1984. Wellington: The New Zealand Film
Archive.
Divided into the following categories: Early Maori films, Contemporary New
Zealand films, Films of the Pacific and Feature films. Within each section films are
arranged chronologically. Each film has details on the producer, photographer and
a brief note on content. Around 65 films are listed.
79. --------. 1985. New Zealand films: presented by the New Zealand Film Archive
at the Pacific Film Archive. Wellington: The New Zealand Film Archive.
Available: ATL P Box 791.43 NZ.FIL 1985
This is a catalogue of the films which were shown at the Pacific Film Archive,
University Art Museum, University of California from the 7th to the 28th
September 1985. It is organised chronologically by the date the films were shown.
Some of the categories organised were: films of the tangata whenua, independent
film making, films by New Zealand women as well as full length cinema films.
The catalogue includes both television programmes, documentaries and films. Each
entry has a brief description.
80. McDowall, Robert M. and C.K. Holmes. eds. 1993. A bibliography of Maori
fisheries in New Zealand fresh waters. New Zealand Freshwater Research Report,
No.8. Christchurch: NIWA Freshwater
Available: NLNZ Rec # 476528
476528
Contains references on Maori freshwater fishes and fisheries. “The nature of
the references listed in this bibliographies varies widely. They range from carefully
documented scientific or historical records, to trivial comments in passing”. The
stated aim of the bibliography is: inclusion of references that contribute to an
overall understanding of what Maori knew about freshwater fishes, how they
exploited them and how they valued them . All items are annotated and notes
indicate importance of reference. The author has aimed for comprehensive scope.
Items are organised in alphabetical author sequence and there is no separate
indexing. This bibliography will be of value to researchers making claims under
the treaty and also to students interested in Maori customs and culture.

Available: NLNZ MAO PAM 613.089994 MCK 1985
The review is organised into subject areas, Appendix 2 consists of a
bibliography. This is divided into two sections: Maori health, and Maori healing
practices. Although some of the references listed are duplicated in bibliography of
the report by Rolleston listed below not all are, therefore it is worth checking.
Within each section items are arranged alphabetically by author.

Created as the starting point for an accessible resource base of Maori and
cultural issues in the field of intellectual disability. It is divided into four sections.
Library resources, video and audio tapes, papers/articles/reports etc. and contact
people. All items are annotated. Topics covered include: Maori attitudes towards
mental health, the impact of culture on their needs as well as Maori health issues.
The scope is limited to resources available through the resource centre.

a study of the years 1970-1984. Special Report Series 78. Wellington: Department
of Health.
Available: NLNZ MAO 362.1039994 POM 1988
The book is organised by subject and the references are found at the back. Lists
110 items some of which relate to health generally in New Zealand and some of
which are on Maori health. Some duplication with the item by Rolleston below but
also contains different relevant references. Mainly consists of material from
medical journals, Maori health statistics publications and WHO publications. Seem
to be organised in the order they were referred to in the publication.
86. Rolleston, Sam. 1989. He Kohikohinga: A Maori health knowledge base.
Wellington: Department of Health.
Available: NLNZ MAO PAM 306.46108 Rol 1989
“A report on a research project for the Department of Health conducted into
Maori health 1988-89 by Sam Rolleston. The report discusses Maori views on
health and also traditional Maori medicine. For researchers the “Booklist” at the
back is valuable. It is organised alphabetically by author and includes monographs,
journal articles and theses as well as some unpublished papers. None of the items
are annotated but the list is valuable because it draws together research on Maori
health - including current medical research and articles from medical journals. 10
pages of references.
87. Scott, P. comp. 1988? Maori mental health: a bibliography. Unpublished
typescript.
Available: ATL reference shelves Folder Maori Sources - Additional Readings
Organised alphabetically by author, not annotated. A useful reading list
consisting mainly of journal articles. Very relevant for Maori health. Seems to have
been compiled from references in The New Zealand Royal Commission on Social
Policy, volume 4. Report of the royal commission on social policy = Te komihana a

Available: NLNZ MAO JPS INDEX.
Includes indexing under name of author and that of “person providing the
information”. The main content of the index is the author/title/subject sequence.
There is also a separate sequence for book/film/recording reviews. Items are not
annotated. As the Journal of the Polynesian Society contains so much information
relating to the Maori and the Pacific area this index is of great value to researchers.
89. Costello, Carol. 1989. Te Wananga index. Wellington: New Zealand Historical
Publications Branch.
Available: ATL P q079.931 COS 1989.
Te Wananga was written in both Maori and English although there were not
always English translations. There is little cross referencing between Pakeha names
and Maori equivalents in the index therefore it is important for the user to check
both and to check variations of names. Covers years 1874-75. Separate section at
the back lists whakapapa from Te Wananga and notes the issue it appeared in. Of
value if trying to track specific person or reference. Mainly lists peoples names
rather than subjects in index.
90. Index to British parliament papers on Australia and New Zealand 1800-1899.
1974. Dublin: Irish University Press.
Available: NLNZ
Published in two volumes. “This index is a content analysis (by subjects,
persons and places) of these papers”. There is a chronological list of papers
indexed, and a subject/person/place index. There are a large number of entries
listed under Maori including: Wars, agriculture, crime, customs, education,
employment, land etc. The only information given under the listing is the volume
number, session, paper number, page number of paper. All the volume numbers
refer to the Irish University Press 1000-volume series of British Parliamentary
papers. Offers excellent detailed subject access to these papers. Supercedes
publication by Margaret J. Adam, John Ewing and James Munro in 1913. A Guide
to the principal parliamentary papers relating to the dominions, 1812-1911.
91. Index to the Appendices to the Journals of the Legislative Council and House
of Representatives of New Zealand. 1854-1913, 1914-1922, 1923-1938,1939-53,
1954-1963. Wellington: Government Printer.
A chronological index to the contents of the Journals of the House of
Representatives. Allows basic subject access to each section of the years listed
above. To find all the information on a subject all the indexes would have to be
checked. As a lot of valuable information is contained in the journals this is
worthwhile. But first check because some bibliographies on specific topics have
been created to provide easier access.(See items 75, 94, 95, 102, 178, 250).

legislation manual = Te puka ako hanganga mo nga ture whenua Maori.
Wellington: Crown Forestry Rental Trust.
Available: NLNZ MAO 346.930432 BAS 1994
This guide was written and compiled for Crown Forestry Rental Trust and is
available in both print and electronic format. It was updated in 1995 by The Maori
land legislation manual = Te puka ako hanganga mo nga ture whenua Maori:
volume 2. (Wellington: Crown Forestry Rental Trust. 1995) which is availablefrom
the Alexander Turnbull Library. The contents are drawn from a comprehensive
scrutiny of all legislation enacted in New Zealand affecting Maori or Maori land
from 1840-1993. It summarizes important pieces of legislation and notes the
historical context. Items are organised chronologically. A Table of Contents lists
the short title and the year of legislation. All legislation included has information
on whether it has been repealed, an outline of relevant sections, commentary, date
of assent and commencement as well as giving cross references to relevant sources
(if they exist). The subject categories used are listed at the front of the print version
- obviously these are more important if searching the computer disk. There are no
cross references to link subjects made in the hard copy.
94. Crown Forestry Rental Trust. 1994. A list of theses relevant to research on
claims to the Waitangi Tribunal. Compiled by the Crown Forestry Rental Trust
Historical Research Unit. Unpublished typescript.
Available: not held at National Library , available at The Waitangi Tribunal
Library.
The compilation consists of “relevant excerpts” from The Union List of Higher
Degree Theses (up to 1989). From 1989-93 the list was compiled from various
other sources, such as university calendars. Arranged chronologically, then by
university department, then alphabetically by author. Quite a wide interpretation of
scope, it includes not just Maori theses but those on topics such as international
relations, politics - the link to the claims is not immediately apparent from the
title. Final section covering from 1989-93 is arranged alphabetically. Difficult to
use because there is no subject access. Really only of value if the researcher firstly
knows that the thesis exists and secondly knows the date. More direct access to
unknown N.Z. theses is provided through the union list as there is a subject index.
Until the supplement of theses presented since 1989 is compiled it is the only
available source for post 1989 theses.
95. Customary Maori land and sea tenure=Nga tikanga tiaki taonga o nehera.
1991. Wellington: Nga Kairangahau, Manatu Maori.
Available: NLNZ MAO 016.34693043 CUS 1991.
A bibliography of sources of information about traditional Maori rights of
tenure over land and water. Does not include published secondary material but
mainly consists of items taken from primary sources. Organisation: consists of an
introductory section detailing sources and exclusions, the bibliographical
references and the indexes. Sources searched included: evidence presented to
Waitangi Tribunal, early minute books of Maori Land court, Appendices to the
Journals of the House of Representatives and older records of Native Department.
The introduction details dates and specific files containing useful data. Some
diaries, journals, Maori manuscripts and periodicals were also searched but less
systematically. The bibliography consists of records downloaded from a database.
Details of Iwi, author, reference, date and brief details are given. According to the
authors the bibliography is organised by main subject categories and item number.
This is not at all clear to the casual user. In the main bibliography the subject
categories are not clearly labelled or separated. Additional access is however
provided with a detailed subject index giving cross references to the item number
and titles as well as an Iwi index.
96. Maori land legislation 1862-1908: annotations. 1993. Compiled by Tarah
Nikora and Tom Bennion. Waitangi Tribunal Occasional Publication No. 1.
Wellington: Waitangi Tribunal, Department of Justice.
Available: NZC MAO 346.930432 MAO 1993.
Intended as an “aid to finding the law in force affecting Maori land transactions
from 1862-1908”. This publication aims to make it easier for the researcher to
identify legislation in force. It also lists amendments. It only includes statutes from
1862-1908 which “deal in a general way with Maori Land”. The acts can be
accessed chronologically by name, or by enactment or repeal dates. The volume
also includes a copy of Thomas Mackay’s Synopsis of Legislation affecting the
alienation and disposition of interests in native lands from 1862-1890 (Appendices
of the Journal of the House of Representatives 1891, G-1A) - this lists the acts
chronologically and notes intent of legislation. Very legal content - intended to
help establish the state of the law at a given date. No separate indexing which
means the researcher must know the date of the legislation - or look through all the
acts chronologically.
97. Maori land claims as recorded in Appendices to Journal of House of
Representatives and the Legislative Council from 1855-1985. 1987. Prepared by
staff of Parliamentary Library . Unpublished typescript.
Available: printout held at ATL Ref P f346.931043089 MAO 1987, a copy can
also be bought on microfiche.
This index does not include all Maori claims made to parliament for land, only
those petitions tabled. It also excludes Pakeha claims for Maori land, petitions
asking changes to Native Lands act, negotiating a land sale or asking for increase
in rent or correspondence and claims covered in Middle Island Native Claims,
1889-1890: report showing natives to whom it is proposed to give land; together
with a list of the natives whose claims have been rejected, Appendices to the
Journals of the Legislative Council, No. 12. Organised in chronological order.
Each entry details the claimant (individual/tribe), a description of the claim,
unusual notes or circumstances of claim and the location in the Appendices to
Journals of the House of Representatives. Of limited value because in order to
access the information it is necessary to know the year the claim was made. It does
shortcut looking through all Appendices to the Journals of the House of
Representatives indexes and contents pages and is less bulky but the lack of
indexing of claimants, iwi and regions detracts from its value.
98. Material by Maori from the Appendices to the Journals of the House of
Representatives 1860-69. 1993. Compiled by Evan Morgan and Jane Falloon.
Waitangi Tribunal Occasional Paper 2. Wellington: Waitangi Tribunal Division,
Department of Justice.
Available: NLNZ MAO 993.022 APP 1993, ATL Ref P q993.1 APP 1993 260576.
Organised chronologically by year. Aimed at assisting researchers into claims
or with interest in this era. Consists of copies from Appendices to the Journal of the
House of Representatives of material by Maori. Most of the material is in Maori
with accompanying translations. Access is also available via a people and place
index for each year. This is useful publication because it enhances access to this
information by providing the copies in one volume. The index also provides
additional access.
99. Mutch, Kevin, comp.1990. Survey and index of royal and other commissions
concerning Maori land claims 1856-1975. Edited by Juliet McLean in 1990.
Compiled as coursework for Maori Land Law, Victoria University of Wellington,
1984.
Available: NLNZ MAO
The author attempts to identify the relevant Royal commission, name its
members, note where information can be found and briefly note the issues
discussed. An index of places, statutes, concepts and broad headings is provided.
The citations for the more important commissions are quite detailed whereas others
are only a sentence. The index is useful to identify commissions relating to specific
regions and would also be useful for Iwi related information. Useful to locate land
related information contained in commission reports for this period.

exclusions. “The Raupatu document bank is a set of copies of official documents
likely to be relevant to confiscation claims before the Waitangi Tribunal. The
project is limited to official public records created or collected by Government
agencies. Including: 1. Official Publications - NZ Statutes, Gazettes, Appendices to

National Archives 1860-1980”. The actual volumes of the document bank are
arranged by record group or type of record. Major types of record group are in
colour coded bindings. The list of contents aims to give a general idea of the
contents of the records copied, the column number and sometimes the page
number. This index volume lists what was copied (file number, date, name,
comments) and in which volume the copy is located. The content lists for the
Appendices to the Journal of the House of Representatives are in a separate
volume. (see item 99).

minute books of Maori Land Courts, microfilmed 1865-1900 Volume No. 1.
Wellington: Dept. of Maori Affairs.
Available: ATL q333 [1961-67] P
Includes a pencil note that National Archives have more recent indexes from
1900-. A printed inventory to the microfilms of the New Zealand. Native Land
Court Minute Books, 1865-1900. Consists of a numerical list of the reels and their
contents. It also includes an index to the Maori Land Court Minute books.

reference number, the place and dates of sittings and the judge. The microfilms for
the Maori Land Court Minute Books: New Zealand 1865-1906, and Tai Tokerau
1900-1962 are available at ATL. ATL also holds the index, in a folder, to Tai
Tokerau and the indexes to the following microfilms held by National Archives.
All the indexes are arranged in the same way as I have noted above. National
Archives has copies on microfilm of
Vol. 3 Waikato-Maniapoto, Vol. 4 Waiariki, Vol. 5 Tairawhiti, Vol 6 Aotea, Vol. 7
Ikaroa, Vol.8 South Island. Indexes to these are available at ATL manuscripts.
105. Paterson, Allison. 1973. Papers relative to the Waitara dispute, 1839-1860, in
the Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives for 1860-1861.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
Chronological arrangement of documents which led up to Waitara dispute.
Does not include documents on the conduct of the ensuing war. Includes a separate
author/title index and a subject index. All items have brief descriptive annotations.
Of particular value to the tribe affected (for land claims research) and of value for
historical information because it gives access to information in Appendices to the
Journals of the House of Representatives. The bibliography is also useful to
anyone interested in government policy, history and land disputes. Good access is
provided through the subject index. Of value to follow up information on both
Maori and Pakeha involved in dispute. Consists of 198 items.
106. Sissons, Lesley M. 1970. Principles of Maori land tenure: a bibliography.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q 016.33332 1970 P, or NLNZ 016 PAY.
Divided into sections: these are monographs, pamphlets/ parliamentary papers/
periodical articles/ theses etc., Cases (mainly Maori Land Court Judgements) and
Wastelands. Includes a separate index by author, region and title. Omissions
include items which discussed Maori land tenure in a general way or only covered
small aspects. Also does not include legal interpretations of Maori land tenure - eg.
from Maori Land Court. The critical annotations are useful pointers for likely value
of items included in bibliography. The author limits the scope to items available in
Wellington libraries. The author notes that important materials which were not
consulted include manuscripts, newspapers, parliamentary debates and minute
books of Maori land court. This bibliography would be of value used in
conjunction with Customary Maori land and sea tenure (item 92) because of
difference in scope. It has a less legal focus. Consists of 65 items.
107. Tai whati: judicial decisions affecting Maoris and Maori land, 1958-1983.
1984. Wellington: Department of Maori Affairs.
Available: NLNZ NZC 346.9310432026 TAI 1984.
Includes decisions of Maori and general courts and also references to post-
1958 writings relevant to the “law, and the Maori, and the development and
administration of Maori land”. Intended to provide access not only for lawyers but
also for planners, the public and Maori people. Only summaries of decisions are
provided for this reason. Consists of: alphabetical table of cases summarised in
text, an alphabetical list of Subject Headings in Index, and the Index (of cases
incorporates references to books, theses, dissertations and articles not summarised
in text, and the case summaries in chronological order). Seems to greatly increase
the access available to court decisions relating to Maori.
108. Tai whati: judicial decisions affecting Maoris and Maori Land from 1958:
1984-85 supplement. 1986. Wellington: Dept. of Maori Affairs.
Available: ATL Ref P q346.9310432 TAI 1986.
Covers cases received during 1984-85 after the printing of the main text and
also includes earlier cases omitted from the main text. Same index as item 106 but
also has a chronological listing of case summaries. Very law focused but useful
access for lawyers or those concerned with land claims.
109. Tai whati 1984-85 index to judicial decisions affecting Maoris and Maori land.
1987. Wellington: Department of Maori Affairs.

subject access to cases. (A separately published index, the content of which is
identical to the index in the supplement listed above, item 105).
110. Turton, H.Hanson. comp. 1877-1883. Turton’s land deeds of the North Island.
Wellington: Government Printer.

the North Island of New Zealand
Maori deeds of land purchases in the North Island of New Zealand
Maori deeds of private land purchases in New Zealand from the year 1815-1840,
with pre-emptive and other claims: together with a list of the old land claims and
the report of Mr Commissioner F. Dillon Bell.
Plans of land purchases in the North Island of New Zealand.
Available: in microform at ATL, for purchase from NLNZ.
Original work consists of sections with indexes organised by Maori deed
number. Also includes alphabetical indexes (by block name) to the deeds and deed
receipts.
111. Welch, Miranda. 1978. New Zealand land question; the impact of official
legislation, 1840-1858. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
Divided into: contemporary sources and secondary sources. Includes a name
index and a title index. Does not include manuscripts, newspapers, periodicals or
official publications. Contains full descriptive annotations. The focus is on
Governors Hobson, Fitzroy, Grey and Browne. “The books listed...are concerned
with their direction and control of official legislation concerning land tenure, and
its impact on the settlers”. The main source used by the author was Hocken’s A
bibliography of the literature relating to New Zealand (item 24). A useful insight
to unofficial views concerning land (for example includes material on how the
settlers felt about policies). The detailed annotations guide the user to relevant
parts, however the overall value of the bibliography is limited: due to the small
scope (the exclusion of official publications) and the lack of a subject index.
112. Williams, Rohi and Josie Laing. 1991. Index to Alexander Mackays
compendium of official documents relative to Native Affairs in the South Island.

113. Benton, Richard A. comp. 1979. Materials for teaching and learning the
Maori Language: a bibliography of published materials for teaching Maori to
speakers of other languages. Wellington: New Zealand Council for Educational
Research, Maori Unit.
Available: NLNZ NZC MAO Pam 016.4994 BEN 1979.
Bibliography is separated into: Dictionaries and word lists, grammars, teachers
manuals, instructional materials, readers and anthologies, serials. Cross references
are made for items relevant to more than one category. Separate author index. The
bibliography aims to list and describe all published materials for teaching and
learning Maori language which are in print and readily available. It excludes
mimeographed and xeroxed materials and printed materials with restricted
availability. Works on Maori language published outside NZ also excluded. Author
includes information on current availability of items. The intended audience is
teachers and students of Maori language. Items have descriptive annotations and
these indicate the level of the items. Obviously only current up to 1980 but a useful
guide for teachers of Maori looking for texts. Descriptive annotations.
114. New Zealand. Learning Media. 1993. Te reo Maori resources. Wellington:
Learning Media, Ministry of Education.
Available: Department of Education Library.
The scope of this guide is limited to Learning Media’s resources in Maori.
Items are listed by format: journals, audio and video cassettes. Each item has a
brief description. More akin to a purchase catalogue than a bibliography. Useful
guide to resources available for children in the school situation.
115. Ranby, Peter. 1980. Maori language bibliography 1969-1979. Working papers
in Anthropology, Archaeology, Linguistics, Maori Studies Number 55. Auckland:
Department of Anthropology, University of Auckland.
Available: ATL q Per WOR 55.
The bibliography includes “writings on the Maori language which have
appeared in the ten years since the publication of The Maori language past and
present by Biggs (1968)”. However I was unable to trace a bibliography in this
publication. The bibliography compiled by Ranby includes: writing on the teaching
of Maori and the grammatical structure of the language, on the extent and nature of
present knowledge of Maori and on bilingual schooling. Some manuscript items
which fall outside this period are listed, as they are not known to have been
included in earlier bibliographies. Works dealing with Maori literature and works
of literary criticism are not included”. The bibliography is organised alphabetically
by author and there are no annotations or additional indexes. This is a checklist
which is now in need of updating.
116. Sommerville, A.D. 1947. A supplement to the Williams bibliography of printed
Maori. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY, ATL Ref q499M 1947 SOM.
Scope: it covers all material printed in Maori from 1900 to 1947, as well as
pre-1900 items missed from the Williams’ A bibliography of printed Maori to
1900, and supplement (see item 114). The main source used by the author was
Alexander Turnbull Library. Updates material in Appendices to the Journals of the
House of Representatives from 1900 but the author did not recheck pre-1900
material. Arranged in chronological order like Williams, and continues the
numerical sequence. Separate author/editor/translator index and title index. Brief
descriptive notes for some items.
117. Williams H.W. 1975. A bibliography of printed Maori to 1900, and
supplement. Dominion Museum Monograph No. 7. Wellington: Government
Printer.
Available: widely.
The scope note “includes any work, however small, printed wholly in Maori,
or in Maori with a translation, has been admitted; so also any work dealing wholly
with the Maori language - as, for example, a dictionary . Excludes works of which
only a portion is in Maori”. Entries are based on sighted items and those listed in
reliable sources. The bibliography is arranged in chronological order, except for
series when kept together for convenience. Undated items put in probable
chronological place. Each item has brief descriptive notes as well as
bibliographical information. There is also a separate index to authors and
translators, to printers, to places of origin and to English and Maori titles. Contains
a supplement in which additional items located after publication of original
bibliography in 1924 are noted as well as corrections of errors. The supplement has
a separate index and should be used in conjunction with main index. This is the
definitive bibliography of Maori language publications. It was updated in 1947 -
see entry under Sommerville (item 113).

118. Fritz, Linda. 1984. Native law bibliography. Saskatoon: University of
Saskatchewan Native Law Centre.
Available: NLNZ L 016.342710872 FRI 1984.
This bibliography is an attempt to bring together international works relating to
native law from law reviews, unindexed newspapers and ephemeral publications.
The scope is international - covering works from U.S., Australia, New Zealand
although the main emphasis is on Canada. Each subject area is therefore divided
geographically. Does not include straight historical, anthropological or sociological
works or periodicals, although it does include periodical articles. Items are not
annotated although with future editions the author hopes this may change.
References of relevance to more than one topic area are duplicated. There is no
separate indexing - an author index would have been useful. Contains some
relevant information on Maori. To access this look under New Zealand within the
subject divisions.
119. Houdek, Frank G. 1988. Protection of cultural property and archaeological
resources: a comprehensive bibliography of law related materials. New York:
Oceania Publications Inc.
Available: VUW Law Lib. eK3791 H836 P.
Divided by format then, within this, by subject. Part One consists of books and
documents, Part Two of Periodical Articles and Part Three Legislation.
Bibliography is limited to materials relating to the law and only English language
items are included. The main focus is on books, articles, reports and documents but
have included a separate part for legislation. Books are listed alphabetically by
author and periodical articles by subject. Useful readings on cultural property but
no additional indexes are provided. It is unclear whether there is any specifically
NZ content, and if there are, these would be difficult to locate. Probably of limited
use for Maori information as the main focus is on cultural property and it seems to
cover mainly the US literature. However it could be useful to Maori researchers
looking for international literature in this area.
120. Robertson, Evelyn and Peter H.Hughes. comp. 1982. A checklist New Zealand
Royal Commissions, Commissions and Committees of Enquiry 1864-1981.
Additional entries by Dorothy Henderson. Wellington: New Zealand Library
Association.
Available: ATL Ref q016.354931093.
Entries are organised chronologically and then alphabetically within each year.
Includes a chairman index and a subject index. There are a number of entries under
Maori land, education, land claims, land courts, reserves etc. Only the commission
name and chairman are detailed in the main sequence. Therefore for land related
commissions Mutch is a more informative source as his work is annotated,
however this gives important access to non-land related commissions. Supercedes
the 1961 A finding list of NZ royal commissions and commissions of enquiry
compiled by Jamieson and Cole A finding List of Royal Commission Reports in the
British Dominions, 1939 (for NZ material). Covers the period 1864-1981.

New Zealand Maori and Moriori of the Chatham Islands. Subject indexes prepared
from the titles of the books. The New Zealand section is divided into categories:
textbooks, law reports, digests of case law, statutes and provincial ordinances. The
NZ subject index has 10 entries listed under Maori customs, Maori land court and
Maoris. It is now out of date but does not appear to have been updated.

The bibliography is organised in four sections: background reading: the treaty
and partnership, Background reading: Tikanga Maori, Biculturalism in Libraries,
Maori Manuscripts.) The aim of this bibliography is to list all material written
about biculturalism in New Zealand libraries. Within each section items are
arranged chronologically. The first two sections are more general and consist of
selective background reading on the Treaty and on Maori society. The last two
sections are more focused toward librarianship. There is an author index. This
bibliography is mainly of value to librarians interested in making libraries more
bicultural. The sections concerning Maori society and the treaty are very brief.

Written as a guide for librarians in the use of Maori language in libraries. It
consists mainly of pronunciation guidelines, and a word list for signs. However it
does include a section on Resources for Maori language. This is intended to guide
librarians in purchasing for their library collection and also for their own use. It is
divided into: language dictionaries, directories, Maori language and culture guides
and librarianship literature. Each section has three or four items which are
annotated.

Available: NLNZ
Does not include radio programmes and films. Divided into four sections.
Section 1. Works by Ihimaera in English and Maori - aims to be comprehensive
and is divided by genre ie. novels, collections of stories, individual stories, articles,
poetry etc. Section 2. consists of Adaptations of Works by Ihimaera (one item),
Section 3 is Selected Criticism of Ihimaera’s Work - excluding reviews and
Section 4 consists of Translations of Works by Ihimaera. The compiler notes that
the criticism section is only a selection of available material. An important source.
There are no annotations or additional indexes. See also item by Giffuni in App. 3.
126. Gadd, Bernard. 1982. An annotated bibliography of publications by Maori and
Pacific Polynesian writers. Number 1, 1982. Pacific Quarterly Moana. 7 (3): 58-9.
Available: NLNZ
A listing of six titles, of limited value because of the limited scope. The titles
listed were published in 1981, 82. The compiler does not note what he has included
or excluded when compiling the list.
127. --------. 1984. A bibliography of publications by Maori and Polynesian writers
in 1983. Rimu 1, no.1(Feb): 13.
Available: NLNZ
Consists of 18 titles. The compiler notes that not much has been published in
the time period covered and that many of the titles listed are for school use.
Organised alphabetically by author, some items are annotated. Again of limited
value because of small scope but in the absence of a more comprehensive listing it
is worth checking.
128. Simms, Norman. 1991. Writers from the South Pacific: A bio-bibliographical
critical encyclopaedia. Washington: Three Continents Press.
Available: NLNZ Reference Collection 013.99 SIM 1991
Organised alphabetically by author, therefore in order to access the
information directly it is necessary to know the name of the author. In the index
under Aotearoa (NZ Maori) the authors are listed so this does enable access for the
user new to the area. Each entry notes biographical details, publications and
bibliographic information.
129. --------. 1993. Writers from the South Pacific: a Bio-bibliographical critical
encyclopaedia. Part II Who’s who: supplement. Working draft 12, February 1993.
Unpublished typescript.
Available: VUW r Z4501 S592 W 2.
Intended to be wider and deeper in scope than item 148. Attempting to include
“more than literary authors in the strict sense of poets, short story writers,
novelists, dramatists and essayists. We are also looking for script-writers, song-
writers, composers of hymns and chants, and others involved in all forms of
literary endeavour. At the same time this extension means accepting within the
category of “literature” all those traditional arts that belong to oral cultures...”.
Organised alphabetically this updates some of the entries in item 126 with recent
interviews and publications.
130. University of Auckland Library. New Zealand and Pacific Collection. 1984.
Maori Writers: A Preliminary Bibliography. Compiled by E.Orwin, A.Duis and
G.Dallimore. Internal publication. Auckland: University of Auckland.
Available: at Auckland University Library - as it is an internal publication it does
not seem to be widely available.
The bibliography was “compiled in response to a request from the Pacific
Information Centre, University of the South Pacific, for contributions to a projected
Bibliography of Pacific Island Writers” which does not appear to have eventuated
yet. It does not include the following: translations by Maori authors of works by
Europeans, individual poems and short stories where the authors are well
represented in published collections, art publications by painters and artists and
unpublished theses. All references cited are to published monographs or items in
periodicals. It only includes authors who have published in the twentieth century. It
is organised by author and subdivided by format within each author. It covers 89
authors and includes a checklist of writers listed. I have not seen this but have
looked at the foreward, index and a sample page. It looks extremely useful for
tracking down specific publications by Maori authors and also as an aid to
identifying Maori authors.

132. Hoyle, Helen M. 1968. Edward Tregear’s writings on the Maori, a
bibliography. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
Author’s scope note states the bibliography includes books, periodical articles
and notes written by Edward Tregear (1846-1931) on the Maori . It includes items
on all aspects of Maori life. It excludes: unpublished material and notes in
periodicals. Items are arranged chronologically and, within each year,
alphabetically by title. The majority of items are also cited by Taylor in A Pacific
Bibliography (1962), and therefore should be included in Taylor A bibliography of
the New Zealand Maori and the Moriori of the Chatham islands. Brief descriptive
annotations of all items. Separate section listing translations. Title index. A useful
bibliography of Tregear’s published writings on the Maori.
133. Jenkins, Pauline. 1968. Stephenson, Percy Smith; a preliminary bibliography.

a bibliography on the published works of S. Percy Smith and does not include
items published in newspapers, or held in the manuscript section of Alexander
Turnbull Library. Material translated by Smith is included. Most periodical articles

publication, book, title of story, publisher/volume/pages etc. and language
published in (Maori or English). Entries organised chronologically within topics.
The lack of separate indexes to entries detracts from this item’s usefulness. Date
ranges 1854-1969. Not annotated.

proper names, an index for general words and sorted words index(notes the word,
frequency of appearance). The index of proper names would give researchers into
whakapapa detailed access into the contents of Nga Moteatea. Possibly of value
also for teachers of Maori language using Nga Moteatea.

separate section on Aotearoa - New Zealand. The scope is confined to works of
poetry, fiction and drama written in English by indigenous peoples of the South
Pacific . The main bibliography consists of works of criticism taken from items
published in academic and literary journals and books. Does not include book
reviews in newspapers. There is also a separate bibliography at the back of the
works. It is divided by geographic region then by type of work (anthologies,
drama, novels, poetry, short fiction). There is an author and title index, a critics
index and a subject index. Includes 171 New Zealand items. All items included are
annotated. An important source for anyone interested in Maori literature. Good

138. Hirst, Linda M. 1973. A select annotated bibliography of publications on the
myths, legends and folk tales of the Maori. Wellington: Library School.
Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q016.3982 HIR 1973 P, NLNZ 016 PAY.
The bibliography is organised by format (books, articles in books and journal
articles) then alphabetically by author within format. Includes an author and
subject index. It excludes children’s books and critical works and studies. The level
is intended to be general interest rather than specialist reader therefore the author
has excluded items which deal primarily with the study of Maori mythology,
although some items do overlap this criterion eg. explanatory notes are included.
Journal articles were selected only from Journal of the Polynesian Society and Te
Ao Hou. Books on Maori myths intended for children generally excluded.
Annotations note level/ authority of items. Annotations to article note the gist of
the story. In total 102 items listed. Useful access provided through subject index
eg. region, Maori names of characters. A useful bibliography for adults to locate
further reading in this area.
139. Orbell, Margaret. 1978. A select bibliography of the oral tradition of Oceania.
Paris: UNESCO.
Available: ATL
This bibliography was prepared in 1974 and is divided into geographical
sections. Under Polynesia there is a section “New Zealand and the Chatham
Islands”. The author notes that “Since there is a vast literature on the oral tradition
of the Maori, the following bibliography is necessarily much more select than those
dealing with other areas in Oceania”. The reader is referred to the Taylor
Bibliography of Publications on the NZ Maori...” (item 36) and to the index of the
Journal of the Polynesian Society (item 87). Entries are organised alphabetically
with brief annotations. There are no additional indexes. The New Zealand section
consists of 86 items and is a good introduction to this topic.
140. Smith, Ann Marie. 1981. Collections of myths, legends and folktales of
Polynesia: a bibliography. Auckland: Auckland Public Libraries.
Available: ATL Box q016.3982 SMI 1981 P
This bibliography was compiled from monographs held in Auckland Public
Libraries. The compiler has concentrated on items which actually tell tales rather
than works about Polynesian mythology. A high proportion of the material in the
bibliography relates to the New Zealand Maori because this literature is better
preserved than that of other Polynesians. Includes a title and geographic index.
Annotated and attempts to indicate value/comprehensiveness/level of item, also
notes illustrations. Arrangement is alphabetical by author. Although the scope of
this bibliography is limited to items held at Auckland Public I consider it would be
useful to students of Maori history and literature as the detailed annotations
indicate the extent and content of items cited. (unclear how comprehensive it
actually is, only 20 items.) For New Zealand it seems to cover the main adult
versions of mythology compilations.
141. Sparrow, Leonie. 1979. The poetic genius of Maori: a select bibliography of
traditional songs: collections and criticism. Wellington: Library School.
Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL q016.78171931 SPA 1979 P.
The stated purpose of the author is to provide access to the main sources of
Maori poetry/song and to those sources of comment, criticism and discussion
which illuminate all aspects of the art; textual, musical, social and historical.
Scope is limited to traditional material. Only material which offers insight into
European attitudes or more substantial items have been included . Formats
included are monographs and serial articles. Does not include available sound
recordings. Divided into three main areas: 1. Collections, 2. Criticism, comment
and discussion and 3. Bibliographies. Items are ordered chronologically within the
sections and the annotations describe content and value. Includes an author/
subject/title index. Includes published monographs with collections of songs,
journal articles. Has a glossary of Maori song types with equivalent English term(s)
A useful summary of existing anthologies of songs and the annotations are useful
pointers for the researcher looking for particular types of songs. The
comment/criticism would be useful to scholars interested in Maori oral tradition.
The compiler has included proverbs in her definition of poetry and therefore this
also covers collections of proverbs.

fiction: a library display prepared as part of the Auckland Teachers College
centennial. Auckland: Teachers Colleges Library.
Available: NLNZ
Consists of a chronological list of books. Some books are annotated. The target
audience for the display was teachers and therefore the compilers have included
stories published in the school journal and folktales. A useful start for teachers
trying to find classroom resources although the content/quality of items is not
assessed which does reduce the value of the listing. The scope is as comprehensive
as possible within time limits - “includes references for background reading, and a
bibliography of legends, picture books and children’s stories on this theme”. For
want of a more comprehensive listing on this topic this is useful. No additional
indexing.

A detailed listing of the archives and manuscripts held at institutions around
New Zealand. Publication suspended. The scope was widened for this publication
from that of its predecessor Union Catalogue of New Zealand and Pacific

acquisitions well. It was published in two parts. Part I: Notifications from libraries
other than Alexander Turnbull Library, and Part II: Notifications from Alexander
Turnbull Library.) NRAM includes all archives and manuscripts held in New
Zealand libraries, museums, historical societies, National Archives and private
individuals. It is issued in installments of 250 entries and includes a nominal,

“C” series was published in 1991,1992. For Maori material it gives more detail
than is available from Te hikoi marama. Information is easily accessible through
the index. It is necessary to check all the series indexes.

wide range of Maori topics.

document is included in the Australian Joint Copying Project. Entries are organised
by location (of the manuscript). Includes a subject index which has an entry for
“Maori” which is further subdivided by subject. Worth checking.

An inventory organised in four series of the papers of George Samuel Graham

list of Graham papers held at Auckland City Library is appended, as are detailed
inventories of specific items. The papers consist of five series (Manuscripts,
Letters, Newspaper Publications, Other Publications and items added after 1981)
The inventory is organised by series. Each item notes the content, bibliographic
details and subjects. The only access is by scanning the inventory for relevant
subjects as there are no additional indexes. Although all the items referred to are
held at the museum making this of limited value to researchers outside Auckland
the inventory is still important for research on Maori topics and is available widely.
Researchers may use to check if this collection holds items of relevance to their
research, obviously they would still need to visit the institute to access. (Generally
the collection is available for public use at the institute)

details locations. Less a guide to carrying out the actual research than a list of
places to go.

An outcome of the author’s endeavours over five years to “trace literature
pertinent to specific research projects in Pacific ethnomedicine”. Divided by
region: Polynesia and Melanesia. In the Polynesia section there are references to
Maori medicine and healing. As there are no additional indexes interested users
must scan the titles (organised alphabetically by author). Not annotated, mainly
journal articles. The author notes the difficulty of tracing this material through
online databases. 11 pages of references. Also cited by Dow “Includes numerous
entries for the NZ Maori. Arranged alphabetically by author, not annotated”)

This bibliography was compiled for the New Zealand Library Association
Certificate course in 1975. “Attempts a comprehensive coverage of the literature on
the folk medicine, or ethnomedicine of the Maori of New Zealand. For purposes of
this bibliography Maori folk medicine encompasses both the traditional beliefs in
the Tohunga and associated rituals and the use of herbal and external remedies.
References have been excluded if they deal specifically and/or solely with Maori
medicine in modern times”. Other exclusions are: brief mentions in larger works,
and herbal and modern plant books, items dealing only with the chemical
properties of plants. Organised alphabetically by author. Consists of 32 items, 10
of which are separated into the appendix as they are the more important references
in the categories excluded by the author. (ie. Only a small part of the whole item
relates to Maori material) Includes an author/subject/title index. Probably
duplicated by material in Parsons, but these items are easier to access and
annotated. Useful in conjunction with the Parsons bibliography.

land disputes,, Native Land acts and the Taranaki Wars have been included only
where directly relevant to the movements. Straight reports on events have also been
excluded, since the aim has been to give access to opinions, both on the movement
itself and on its handling by the Colonial authorities. Reprints from other

secondly, those of translations from the two Maori language newspapers Te
Pihoihoi and Te Hokioi, which were felt too relevant to be excluded”. Items are

collection of items dealing with the portrayal of Maori in fiction and the way in

existence of useful theses in area. Within subject grouping organised
alphabetically by author. None of the items are annotated. Material from a variety
of formats. The level is general information aimed at the interested layperson,
although some academic journal articles are included. This is a useful bibliography
for someone beginning research in this area with an interest in the history of race
relations, although the lack of descriptors indicating value/extent of items makes
bibliography less useful. Large date range of material. No author/title index which
would have been useful.

Mahurangi districts prior to 1860: a select bibliography from the holdings of
Auckland Public and Auckland University Libraries. Wellington: Library School.

Divided chronologically, then by subject and format. The bibliography is
based on collections of the Auckland Public Library and the Auckland University
Library. “Works relating to the history of the town of Aucland, and to the activities
of the Europeans in other areas, have only been included if they were published
before 1860. Archaeological material, newspaper material and the Appendices to
Journal of the House of Representatives have also been excluded”. The focus of the
bibliography is on the traditional history of the region. There is an index to
authors/subjects/titles and sources. Although the work is limited to items held at
Auckland Public or Auckland University Libraries it is probably fairly
comprehensive within this subject as most of the relevant material would be held
by these libraries. Good access provided through indexes and the bibliography
would be a useful start for someone researching the Maori settlement of the area.

The scope of the bibliography is limited to material of a general nature which
is readily available and to works descriptive of the movements, their origins and
characteristics and the people involved in them. It excludes biographical material
unless it dealt with religious movement as well, also omitted material dealing
primarily with Maori Wars and HauHau campaigns. Does not include
parliamentary papers (unless descriptive of a movement) , primary material and
newspaper articles. Not aimed at serious research but researcher at secondary
school/university level. Text arranged chronologically by the name of the
movement. More general texts discussing more than one movement are listed
separately. Descriptive annotations although noted if material contentious or in
need of explanation. Includes author/title index and a separate subject index. Poor
quality copy. Brief annotations. 59 items.

The bibliography is organised in alphabetical sequence by author. Includes a
classified index to Maori Religion and Missions . This notes the author and title of
the item under the relevant subject. This is further divided into general and specific
items. Supercedes earlier editions of the religious history of NZ. The author notes
however that the bibliography is not comprehensive and for pre-1960 works users
should check Bagnall. Some items have brief annotations. An important
bibliography for anyone interested in Maori religion and religious movements.

are annotated but the majority are not. A variety of literature concerning
adolescence in New Zealand is included: specialist journal articles, fiction,
academic articles. The majority of items concern the New Zealand Maori rather
than Oceania. A useful starting point for any researcher in this area, although dated
now.

Maori/Pakeha relations. Includes an author/title and subject index. All material in
bibliography is based on field research carried out in New Zealand. Maori material
covered is only post 1960 as two library school bibliographies one published in
1950 (G. Van der Poots) and one in 1960 (D.Cooke) cover earlier period. Research
carried out by voluntary organisations excluded. Includes chapters from books,
theses and journal articles. 12 items annotated and included in section but another
13 items in other sections are cross referenced. Index refers in detail to Maori
related items included in bibliography.

Organised by subject, most of the information relating specifically to Maori is
included in a section on Multicultural Issues and Studies - this is further divided
into general education, general secondary education, achievement, language,
tertiary education, adolescence, health, migration.. There is also a small section on
Maori and Pacific Island employment. Worth checking. None of the items have
annotations. Includes an index of author, editors and compilers.
222. Schoen, Grace M. 1960. A list of references on New Zealand Social Services.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
A list of books and articles on New Zealand social services. The compiler notes
that she is using the same subject headings as Green W.A.E. and C.A. Oram, E.G.
Schwimmer. 1954. Social Services in New Zealand. Study group N.Z. Institute of
Public Administration, (Wellington branch) - which included a section on “The
Maori People” consisting of 12 items. The compiler intended that the
bibliographies be used in conjunction and therefore has generally “not repeated
items listed in Green, although has included if she felt the annotation of value”.
Schoen’s bibliography is organised by subject - including a section on “The Maori
People (all aspects of the subject)” Items 224-259 fall in this category. It is an
extremely useful source of information on Maori social history. It also includes
cross references to other relevant items and an author index. Contains useful items
on topics such as education, crime, social statistics, housing. As the bibliography
by Green only lists around 12 items in the Maori People section, it is probably not
necessary to use in conjunction with this for Maori topics.

A note inside the directory states that it is the “first attempt to collect together
the vast range of official statistics that are collected about the Maori population of
New Zealand”. The emphasis is on regularly published statistics. Possible contacts
for unpublished sources of statistics are listed. There is a subject index to the
statistics available. These include statistices on age, cancer, courts, dwellings etc.
The statistics are arranged by subject. Lists the publications available, not
annotated.

Available: ATL reference shelves
Updated to 1989 by various un-named compilers. Organised alphabetically
within the chronological sequences. No index, therefore to use have to read through
all the titles. A useful source for Maori information, as research essays are not
listed in the Union list of higher degree theses in New Zealand libraries, but is
largely superseded by Mosen (see below). Includes research essays from Auckland,
Otago, Canterbury and Massey. No annotations or indications of value/merit. Notes
the author, title, date and university. Updates: 1976-8, 1978-80, 1981-2, 1982-4,
1985-9. Covers the same material as the publication compiled by the Hocken
Library listed below.
225. A Handlist of Research Essays in History 1968-89. 1990. Compiled by
Hocken Library. Dunedin: Hocken Library. Unpublished typescript.
Available: Hocken Library
The research essays are listed alphabetically by author and there are no
additional indexes. Therefore to find Maori related material the researcher would
have to check every item. Include research essays from all the universities in NZ.
Contains much the same information as Cookson (above) For research essays up to
1982 the researcher should check Mosen and then look through either this
catalogue or the Cookson one for research essays written since then.
226. Dickson, Diane and Carol Dosser. 1970. World catalogue of theses on the
Pacific Islands. Canberra: Australian National University Press.
Available: ATL reference shelves.
The items listed in this catalogue are based on the microfilm library of theses
on the Pacific Islands which is maintained by the Department of Pacific History at
A.N.U. and supplemented with other thesis catalogues. It is divided geographically
(ie. theses written about New Zealand are in the NZ section), then alphabetically
within this. Scope includes doctoral theses, M.A.s and also some B.A.Honours and
Diploma of Education theses if considered significant . The New Zealand section
lists 145 theses dating up to early 60s, and the addenda lists another 14. There are
many theses on Maori included. The scope is not limited solely to New Zealand
theses therefore this is a useful place to look for theses concerning the Maori
submitted outside New Zealand universities. No subject index is provided therefore
it is necessary to look through all the titles listed in the NZ section.
227. Mosen, Norah D. 1985. Theses on the history of New Zealand 1968-82.

European history, Politics etc. Notes author, title, university, year and degree. Also
includes an author and a subject index. This should include all the items listed in
Cookson as it lists this as a source. This publication gives much better subject
access to research essays than Cookson. Supplements Rodger, M. Theses on the
history of New Zealand (listed below).

school bibliographies on Maori topics is provided through the index. However as I
have included most of the relevant bibliographies it will not be necessary to check
this if you are using this guide.

This publication lists all the higher degree theses presented at universities in
New Zealand. They are arranged chronologically under broad subject groupings.

The extensive bibliography in this book is divided into published and
unpublished information. The unpublished information is further divided by
holding institution and items are listed alphabetically within this. Published
information is divided by format. Section 2. relates to Published Documents and
Official Publications which are listed alphabetically. There are also sections on
Newspapers and Periodicals, Books articles and pamphlets, Unpublished theses
and research essays and Unpublished papers. Although more material will have
been published on the Treaty since this book was published it is the only
bibliography which I could locate relating to all the material available on the treaty.
It is fairly comprehensive on primary material, although secondary material will
require updating.

Alexander Turnbull Library.
Available: free from ATL
A leaflet which outlines some search strategies for tracing whakapapa and lists
the relevant sources under each approach. Divided into: Family Sources, Iwi-
Waka Approach Modern Approach and Other Sources. Limited to the resources
available for this type of research in Turnbull Library. Includes maps with tribal
areas.
237. Canterbury Public Library. 1990. Whakapapa: sources of Maori genealogy and
history in the New Zealand collection. New Zealand Collection Series No. 4.
Christchurch: Canterbury Public Library.
Available: widely
This publication supersedes the first edition which was published in 1985.
Basically a local guide this is divided into two main categories: sources inside the
New Zealand Collection and sources outside it. The main focus is on internal
holdings. Subdivides sources in the New Zealand Collection into: family and tribal
structure, published whakapapa, history, sources, indexes and bibliographies,
periodicals, official records. The published whakapapa are divided by format and
listed by tribe. Scope is limited to items held in the library, which detracts from its
value as a national guide. However it does indicate locations of some published
whakapapa within monographs which is useful and I have not located elsewhere in
print.
238. Eggleston, Kim. 1994. A select bibliography of Ngai Tahu history available in
the South Island - Te Wai Pounamu. Prepared as requirement for Diploma in

Not sighted.
239. French, Patricia and Robin Hakopa. 1993. Ngapuhi. Auckland: Auckland City
Libraries.
Available: ATL Ref P q016.3058 IWI 1993.
Volume one of Iwidex (see the reference under computer files, item 45) which
was published in print. Consists of alphabetical subject/author index with item
references. Items are arranged in sequence according to their item number in the
database. Each entry notes the publication details, location, subjects, iwi and waka
and includes a brief description of extent of item. Obviously extremely useful to
any researcher interested in Ngapuhi. On a more general level it also is useful for
biographical references to famous Maori and other historical interests. (eg.
missions, land tenure). Volume Two: the Tainui section was due for publication
late 1994, when the file consisted of 950 entries.-source Millett Bibliographical
Work in New Zealand... 1994.
240. Garven, Peter. comp. Genealogy of the Ngai Tahu.
Available: Computer file?, not located.
Not sighted. It was mentioned in a publicity leaflet for Canterbury Museum
and Library. Compiled by Peter Garven from Land Court records and other
sources. Possibly a computer file.
241. Grover, R.F. 1960. A preliminary listing of Maori genealogies in manuscript
and in published works, in the Alexander Turnbull Library. Unpublished
typescript.
Available: ATL q572.9931 1960 P Copy available on reference shelf ATL.
Each entry details the source, table references, pages and tribe/person
concerned. Divided into: alphabetical arrangement by author of Maori genealogies
in manuscripts and books, a chronological list from the Maori Newspaper (Te
Waka Maori), chronological list and an alphabetical tribal index of genealogies,
notes volume number and page references, from the Journal of the Polynesian
Society from 1892-1959, extracts from Transactions and Proceedings of the NZ
Institute, as well as various other books, theses. References made in manuscripts
and papers to figures such as White, Elsdon Best, S. Percy Smith, Edward
Shortland are also annotated. Very confusing to read and use. A major weakness is
the lack of an iwi, author and title index. However with persistence it can be used
to locate genealogies.
242. Hughes, Lesley M. 1960. A bibliography of family histories and genealogies
published before and during the year 1960. Wellington: N.Z. Library School.
Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
Includes both Pakeha and Maori genealogies. Notes that the articles and books
included are a selection not an exhaustive list for the section on Maori genealogy.
The index to these items has been compiled from the names of tribes and places .
The author also notes that other useful sources for Maori genealogy are: Personal
Names Index to Journal of Polynesian Society, Minute Books of Maori Land
Court. Notes genealogies which have been published as well as articles about
researching Maori genealogy. A total of 35 items are annotated. The Maori
genealogy section is indexed, by tribe and place, separately to the European
genealogy section which enhances access. A useful starting place for researchers
interested in Maori genealogy.
243. Irwin, Kathie and Willis Katene. 1989. Bibliography of Iwi based learning
resources: Ngati Kahungunu and Takitimu in Maori People and the Library: A
bibliography of Ngati Kahungunu and Te Waka O Takitumu Resources.

Lists in alphabetical order by author 31 items relating to Ngati Kahungunu and
Te Waka O Takitumu. Most items not annotated. Each item has information on
author, title, year of publication, place of publication and publisher. Useful start for
researcher interested in these iwi. Includes journal articles, booklets and newspaper
articles.

245. --------. 1989. A catalogue of manuscripts, printed and published material in
the Maori language relating to the history and tradition of the tribes in Tai
Tokerau; a catalogue of Maori traditions of Tai Tokerau held on tape in the
Archive of Maori and Pacific Music at the University of Auckland. Whangarei: Te
Runanganui o Taitokerau. Revised by. Te Aniwaniwa Hona.
Available: NLNZ MAO PAM 016.9931201 CAT 1989.
A reprinted revised edition printing in the same volume the 1981 publications
by McRae of material relating to the tribes of Taitokerau. This is an indispensible
source for anyone interested in tribes of the Tai Tokerau. The indexes increase the
access available to this material - particularly manuscript material. The first
catalogue is:
A catalogue of Manuscript printed and published material relating to the history
and traditions of the tribes in Taitokerau. It is divided into two parts - manuscripts
collections and published works. Within these two main categories material is
further subdivided by format and location.(eg. Alexander Turnbull Library or
Auckland Public. and books, journals, newspapers.) The location of the
manuscripts are noted. A subject/author index for the catalogue greatly enhances
access(item 244).
The other catalogue bound in this publication is:
A catalogue of Maori traditions of Taitokerau held on tape in the archives of
Maori and Pacific Music at the University of Auckland. Divided by the collections
held. These include: general, McLean, Maori Purposes Fund Board. An index to
first lines of songs is included as is a separate subject index. The subject headings
are organised into 8 main sections - Iwi, and type of song eg. Nga Korero, Nga
Katakia. The catalogue is intended eventually to be superseded by a
comprehensive tribal index held in the archive itself . The content of both
catalogues is identical to when first published, no new material appears to have
been added, although minor details such as the new address of Turnbull have been
updated and the layout is slightly different.
246. Millett A.P.U. 1989. Bibliography of New Zealand Family Histories.
Hamilton: University of Waikato. Unpublished typescript.
Available: ATL reference shelves, printout dated Sept. 1989 which is only
available for use at ATL
The aim of the bibliography is to list all separately published family histories.
Organised alphabetically by author or title “a printout from a computer file held at
University of Waikato Library...it should be stressed that the bibliography is not
complete”. All publications have been indexed by author and by family name.
Other indexes (very incomplete) include: Founders of NZ branch of family,
surnames of those who married into first generation of family, country, county and
town of origin, ship on which founding family arrived, year of arrival, place and
region of main settlement in NZ. Contains an author index and a separate family
index.
Mainly Pakeha family histories but does include some Maori.
247. Tremewan, C. 1986. Select Bibliography of South Island Maori. Te Karanga 2,
(1): 27-34.
Available: ATL
Organised by subject, the divisions include: 1. The Archaic and Classic Maori,
2. Traditional History, Mythology and Folklore, 3. Accounts of Early European
Visitors, 4. The Musket Wars, 5. Colonists and Christianity, 6. The Great Land
Grab. Within each section material is organised alphabetically by author. All of the
items have brief annotations detailing level and content. A very useful
bibliography, although there are no additional indexes items are cross referenced,
annotations are helpful and the subject division enhances access.
See also: 40, 156, 230.
248. Adams, Robin. 1961. The Maori Wars, 17 March 1860- 29 April 1864.
Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY, ATL q 016.9931 1961 P.
Has a detailed subject division of material. Author notes that the bibliography
has tended to concentrate on books and pamphlets. Manuscripts, newspaper and
periodical articles, poetry, fiction, Maori language material and most government
publications are excluded. Most items are annotated. The author also includes an
unannotated list (organised by subject) of references in the AJHR. Relevant sources
such as Maori newspapers and theses are also noted but were not sighted by author.
Includes an author/title index. In total lists 156 sources and mentions additional
sources. Of value, despite the exclusions, to anyone interested in early NZ history
and the wars.
249. Hutchinson Jan. 1959. Bibliography of published works and articles and of
university theses about women in public life in New Zealand. Wellington: Library
School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY, ATL 016.92 1959 P.
This bibliography has very little Maori content. Most of the bibliography
covers writings on well known pakeha women from New Zealand rather than
Maori women. However there is a section on “Maoris: Land Settlement” which
contains items about Princess Te Puea Herangi. (5 items). Of marginal value for
anyone researching Maori women.
250. Irwin, Kathie and Michelle Erai et al. 1991. Maori Women: an annotated
bibliography. Wellington: Published by Michelle Erai, Everdina Fuli, Kathie Irwin
and Lenaire Wilcox.
Available: VUW
A new edition (1993) was “in process” at ATL, not sighted. The 1991 edition
is organised alphabetically by author with a detailed subject index. Some items
annotated. There is also a section notes on authors giving variations in names of
authors. Published in print from computer database on Maori women. Authors
intend to maintain a computer database on Maori women located in Education
department at Victoria University of Wellington. The bibliography aims to give
people interested in Maori women access to relevant research and publications. The
references selected will be written either by or about Maori women. Exclusions (or
areas requiring further study) included women in Maori magazines: such as Te Ao
Hou, Te Kaea, Te Iwi o Aotearoa, Te Karanga, legends, newspapers, Maori
proverbs, oral histories, arts, and sport. Very useful source for information by or
about Maori women. - also kept as updated computerised database.
251. Wills, Janet. 1975. Women and education in New Zealand: an annotated
bibliography. Wellington: Library School. Unpublished typescript.
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY
Divided by subject this includes a section on Maori women and education.
Does not include newspaper items. No date restriction it includes material from
1870-1975. Also includes theses. The compiler used Roth A bibliography of New
Zealand education. 1964. as a source to check items. Includes an author/title index.
There are 8 annotated items relating to Maori women and education in a total
bibliography consisting of 79 items. As Roth (see item 73) does not include post
1964 items the bibliography is useful to supplement Roth.
Includes additional items which were identified after the main sequence was arranged.

texts from the Museum library. Text in English, includes index.
Giffuni, Cathe. 1990. Witi Ihimaera: a bibliography. Australian and New
Zealand Studies in Canada. No. 4. (Fall): 106-111
Available: NLNZ
Divided into two sequences: works by Ihimaera and criticisms of the works.
The works by Ihimaera section is further divided into books, miscellaneous
writings and an interview. These are organised by title. The second section on
criticism is divided into a general category then grouped according to the title of
the works. These include: Pounamu pounamu, Tangi, Whanau, The new net goes
fishing, Into the world of light: an anthology of Maori writing, The matriarch, The
whale rider, Dear Miss Mansfield. No additional indexing and not annotated.
Updates the 1984 bibliography by Corballis (item 123).
Hargreaves, R.P. 1968. Maps in the Appendices of the Journal of the House of
Representatives. Part I: 1861-1890, Part II: 1891-1907. Dunedin: Geography
Department, University of Otago.
Available: NLNZ NZC 912.931 HAR 1968
Arranged in chronological order. Each entry notes the title of the map, the date
and its location in the Appendices of the Journal of the House of Representatives.
Consists of 1031 titles and there are no annotations or additional indexes. Useful
source for land claims despite lack of indexing.
Hargreaves, R.P. 1962. Maps of New Zealand appearing in British
Parliamentary Papers. Dunedin: University of Otago Press.
Available: ATL reference shelves.
Organised chronologically this consists of around 70 maps. It includes a
subject index which has entries under “Maoris”. Valuable source for land claims.
Tribal and Ethnic Art. 1982. Modern Art Bibliographic Series Vol. 1. Oxford,
England: Clio Press.
Available: NLNZ Rec # 88771
88771
Not sighted but according to the abstract it is a bibliography of “900 abstracts
of books, available dissertations, periodical articles and exhibition catalogues with
essays or texts published beween 1972-79”. Includes a section on New Zealand
under Oceania (pages 76-80) and indexes.
I have included a listing of superseded items because not all libraries will hold all the sources listed in the main bibliography and some may hold the older sources. Therefore it is useful to know the relationship between them. Also some of the items I have included have included bibliographies on Maori topics - such as Taylor. However many of the items which were valuable at the time of publication, in 1972, have now been superseded. I envisage this section being used as a checklist. It is organised alphabetically.
Adam, Margaret J., John Ewing and James Munro. 1913. Guide to the
principal parliamentary papers relating to the dominions, 1812-1911. Oliver &
Boyd: Edinburgh.
Available: ATL 328.42 1913 P.
This was cited by Taylor and has been superseded by the 1974 Index to British
Parliamentary Papers on Australia and New Zealand 1800-1899, 1974. Divided
geographically and includes a section on Parliamentary papers relating to New
Zealand, there are also NZ papers listed under “Miscellaneous Papers”. Brief
annotations noting content of paper, arranged chronologically dating from 1835-
1904. Access through the subject index - some papers in the index relating to
Maori - these are listed under Aborigines (N.Z.) Useful access to this material is
provided by this guide.
Biggs, Bruce. 1971. Maori and race relations theses: University of Auckland
theses concerning the Maori, other Polynesians and race relations in New
Zealand. Working Papers in Anthropology. Auckland: Department of
Anthropology, University of Auckland.
Available: NLNZ. 016.301451994 (301.451994)
Items are arranged alphabetically under the department. Include theses from:
Anthropology, Education, Geography, History. A separate alphabetical author
index is included. Superseded by 1972 revised edition by same author.
Calcott, Cecile. 1958 Land development and settlement in the Waikato; a
preliminary bibliography. Wellington: N.Z. Library School Bibliography.
Unpublished typescript.
Available NLNZ 016 PAY.
This bibliography is divided by subject and includes grey literature (pamphlets,
theses) It is not comprehensive and does not include material which is too
technical or specialised or too slight in content . General books on New Zealand
are also excluded and so also are most newspaper articles. There is a separate
author index but no subject index. Although some items listed, for example, under
land settlement or history will contain Maori content, I would expect this
bibliography to have been superseded by the one put together by NZ Collection
librarians at Waikato. Of limited use.
Cole, Arthur H. 1939. Finding list of royal reports in the British Dominions.
Cambridge, Mass: Harvard Univ. Press.
The Maori Affairs Royal Commissions are noted on pages 117-119, listed in
Taylor. Superseded by NZLA publication A checklist New Zealand Royal
Commissions, Commissions and Committees of Enquiry 1864-1981 (item 119).
Collier, J. 1889. The Literature relating to New Zealand: a bibliography.
Wellington: Government Printer.
Organised chronologically with a classified catalogue referring to authors and a
separate author catalogue. Includes sections on Maori in classified catalogue.
Superseded by Bagnall.
Henry, Elizabeth. 1991. The Treaty of Waitangi = Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Palmerston North: Palmerston North College of Education Library.
The scope of this bibliography is limited to material relating to the Treaty of
Waitangi which is available in the College of Education Library. Divided into two
sections: 1. books, sets and videorecordings - with descriptive annotations and 2.
Serial articles. It also contains an alphabetical author/title index. Because the
bibliography is limited to items held by this library it is of little value to anyone
seriously researching the Treaty. A better starting place would be the bibliography
in Claudia Orange's book The Treaty of Waitangi. The items included in the serials
listing date up to 1990 and therefore will contain more recent references than in
Orange - however they do have an education focus and would require updating for
current research needs.
Jamieson, Donald Graham 1961. A finding list of New Zealand Royal
Commissions and Commissions of Inquiry together with some departmental and
special commissions and Committees of Inquiry
Available: NLNZ 016 PAY.
Organised chronologically with a separate index to chairmen and a subject
index. Commissions relating to land are duplicated and dealt with more
comprehensively in the index by Mutch. None of the items are annotated. However
the scope covers more than land related commissions and therefore this finding list
is valuable. Under Maori in the subject index there are items listed under: Maori
affairs, Maori land, Maori model villages, Maori reserves, employment of Maori
and usury on loans to Maori. The index by Mutch is more comprehensive and up to
date for land related material. Superseded in this area by A checklist New Zealand
Royal Commissions, Commissions and Committees of Enquiry 1864-1981. 1982.
Wellington: N.Z. Library Association
Jaspers, Judith. 1960. A bibliography of New Zealand education, 1947-1960.

National Library of New Zealand. 1991-93. Maori Resources Guidebook,
Poutu-te-rangi, compiled by Mereana Coleman. Wellington: National Library of
New Zealand. Unpublished typescript.
This was superseded by a later edition renamed Rauemi Tuhi (item 165).
Consists of three select bibliographies. (Maori Tribal History Bibliography, Maori
Culture and Traditions Bibliography, and Maori Serials Bibliography) A list of
items held in National Library. Each entry consists of author, title, location and
date of publication only . It also includes a subject heading index, a list of Maori
Newspapers and Periodicals, 1842-1984 and a list of Maori Titles in the serials
collection with non-Maori content. The bibliographies are superseded by Rauemi
Tuhi: Maori Resource Guide but the newspaper listing is not duplicated.
Parlophone Co. 1927. Maori recordings made at Rotorua during the visit of the
Duke and Duchess of York by the Parlophone Co. Sydney, Mortons Print.
A list of songs recorded on 8 records. The contents of the records and the
performer are listed. Not useful for research access - just a list of available recorded
Maori music. No additional indexing.
Polynesian Society. 1931. List of Reprints from the Journal of the Polynesian
Society, also of other available Maori publications. Wellington: Polynesian
Society, N.Z.
Available: ATL P 301.0995 POL 1931
An alphabetical list of the reprints which were available at the time of
publication from the society. The second part of the publication lists Maori
literature. Includes Dominion Museum monographs, bulletins, Polynesian Society
memoirs, Memoirs of the Board of Maori Ethnological Research and Alexander
Turnbull Library Bulletin. Basically a catalogue listing publications available for
purchase in 1931. This material should be duplicated in Bagnall. (Superseded)
Rogers, Frank. comp. 1984 Archives New Zealand: A directory of Archives and
Manuscript repositories in New Zealand, The Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Tokelau,
Tonga and Western Samoa. Auckland: The Archives Press.
Organised geographically with an alphabetical index of repositaries, a
classified index and a general index to collections. Includes archives, manuscripts
sections of libraries and other institutions and organisations with reference
collections which include archival or manuscript material. Includes a list of
archives which did not respond to the questionnaire and whose collections are
therefore not included. In the general index there are entries listed under Maori
affairs, Maori battalion, Maori births and deaths, Maori Land Court, Maori
manuscripts and whakapapa, Maori marriages and Maori music. Superseded by
second revised edition published in 1990 Archives New Zealand 4.Wilson, J.O. 1960. Finding List of British Parliamentary Papers relating to
New Zealand 1817-1900. Wellington: General Assembly Library.
The list is divided by format into: bills, acts, papers wholly of principally
concerned with NZ, and minor papers. Within each section entries are arranged
chronologically. Acts concerning general colonial measures have been excluded.
“The list is not designed to supersede the New Zealand section of: Adam, Ewing
and Munro. Guide to the Principal Parliamentary Papers relating to the Dominions,
1812-1911. Despite its more limited scope and one or two minor errors in numbers,
this volume is still of great value” There are no additional indexes but despite this
the volume is a useful guide for researchers wishing to locate material on early NZ
history in the British parliamentary papers. Cited by Taylor, superseded by Index to
British Parliamentary Papers on Australia and New Zealand 1800-1899, 1974.
Art Gallery Bookshop. 1992.New Zealand Art Books and Catalogues. 7th ed.
Auckland: The Bookshop.
Available: ATL P Box 700.294 ART 1992.
This is a catalogue listing the art items held at the art gallery bookshop. It is of
value to anyone interested in seeing items written on Maori art as it has a separate
listing of Maori and Polynesian Art Books which it holds. It lists 39 items and is
not annotated. The listing of Polynesian art also may have books with items on
Maori art. However the scope is too limited (it only includes items which are in
print and which are stocked by the bookshop) for it to be of great value to
researchers. Maybe could be useful as a supplement to Hanson (item 16).
