E-CLIPS FAQ
Why do some stories appear in the database but didn't come into my e-clip?
This will occur with some stories from the Fairfax newspapers:
They have a "fast feed" (called STOP PRESS on the search screen) - this
comes to us starting at 6:00 am each day, and is fed through the E-clips
system.
Each day (around 8:00 am) we also get a "daily" feed which contains
stories that we have already received via fast feed, and some others. The
fast feed ones usually are the same as the daily ones, but the dailys
have added subject categories, author fields etc. The others, are stories
that never made it into the fast feed - usually because they were held up
while someone decided whether they had copyright or not.
Sometimes if a story is in several parts it will not get into the fast feed
because there will be no guarantee that all the parts which make up the entire
article will get there in time. In that case the story goes into the daily feed only.
The daily ones (usually 1 or 2 days old) then bump the equivalant fast
feed ones from the database. This means that the new version will be
retrieved in a search, not the fast feed version. However the fast feed
version is kept in place to allow E-clips users to still view it from the
E-clips URL we sent. This file is eventually deleted (1-3 months later) -
which is why you need to do the deep-linking process if you want to keep a
link to it anywhere on your system.
See the Technophile link on this page for details of using deep-linking.

NEW ZEALAND INDEX FAQ
What is New Zealand Index?
A collection of New Zealand related databases where publications are indexed providing a record of source, dates, bibliographic information and sometimes, a short abstract.
What is an abstract?
A short description of an article.
Why can't I get the full article?
Sometimes the owner does not want to put it on The Knowledge Basket or
anywhere else in full digital form. They want to sell the print version and
sometimes put some parts on their own website, or it may only be available in print form.
How many collections are there on The Knowledge Basket New Zealand Index?
14.
What are they?
• From Auckland City Libraries :- Index Auckland and New Zealand Card Index

Where can I get the whole article from this collection?
• If it is from Newzindex you can get it from the public library.
• If it is from Index New Zealand you can get it from the National Library, or try your nearest public or tertiary library.
• If it is from the New Zealand Card Index or Auckland Index, try Auckland City Librariers or the National Library, or try your nearest public or tertiary library.
• If it is from NZ Science, then go to the CRI who put up the information.
• If it is from Index Auckland go to the Auckland Public Library.
• If it is from the NZ Woman's Weekly Index you can see microfilm versions at Auckland and Dunedin City Public Libraries, the Alexander Turnbull and National libraries in Wellington, and Turitea library at Massey University, Palmerston North.
• If it is from INZART go to the University of Auckland Library.
• If it is from the Southland Regional News Index, try Dunedin Public Libraries or the National Library.
How can I research my family history or genealogical information from early times?
The NZ Woman's Weekly index covers the period 1932-1951 and Auckland Index contain records from early settlement times. Both indexes provide the names of family members in the context of the article. The Bibliography of New Zealand Family Histories has records from 1860 onwards.
Why would I use an index anyway?
Finding business names and history, people's names and history are
sometimes not easy to locate in a full text database and it makes
more sense to look in a keyword abstract collection first. An index may go back
to pre-electronic production of newspapers and magazines, and of course, sometimes
the paper version of the newspaper or journal may no longer be available.
Why are the NZ Herald's Classified Advertisements in the New Zealand Index?
Family notices like the Births and Deaths can be searched along with other indexes that contain family histories such as Index Auckland, NZ Woman's Weekly and the Bibliography of NZ Family Histories.
I can get science material about New Zealand in other places, so why bother with NZ Science?
Yes you can, but you will not get the unpublished papers and the
conference material quite as readily. Nor will you find the depth of archive.
What else is NZ Science useful for?
Those school projects on mangroves and similar topics or the papers your
partner in the law firm gave at an environmental conference.
I am a student - can I afford it?
Most New Zealand universities and polytechs have access to New Zealand Index
for all students. Check with the library at your university or college.
I am at school can I have it?
We have a very special offer for all schools. Check with your library to see
if your school has a site licence.
Can I search on the New Zealand Index and just pay for what I use? No you must have a site licence for this database.
How do I start?
